David Folkman
Personal Narrative: David Folkman, November 13, 2012
Susan and I live in the San Francisco area, in a suburb, San Mateo, about half way between San Francisco and Palo Alto.
Our four children, Louis, Sarah, Karen, and Jeff, have established themselves in four different parts of the country: Minnesota, Massachusetts, Northern California, and Oregon. Three are married and among them there are six grandchildren. It’s quite remarkable to see these various lives unfold, and Susan and I are fortunate that we are able to spend time with them in their homes and in ours.
Susan retired two years ago from her position as Director of the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at University of California San Francisco, a medical school in which she was a professor of medicine. Susan is working on another book in her field of psychological stress and coping.
My background in the areas of department store management, specialty store retailing, wholesaling, and venture capital all seem to provide useful experience with respect to managing various enterprises. After graduate school (MBA), we started out in Houston, where I was with Foley’s, then to St. Louis, where I was with Famous-Barr, and next went to San Francisco, where I joined Macy’s West, and later moved across the street to the competing department store, The Emporium, as its CEO. In my venture capital work, my partners and I invested in retail startups including Ross Stores, Gymboree, PetSmart, Callaway Golf, Natural Wonders, Imaginarium, and others. In the mid-nineties I was CEO of Esprit, where we designed, made, wholesaled and retailed junior and kids apparel, accessories, and footwear.
I am retired but do substantial pro-bono work as a mentor in the Stanford Business School's course in entrepreneurship. I also consult with 501(C)3 organizations through Harvard Business School Community Partners.
Susan and I, after being in one house in Hillsborough for 36 years moved to an apartment less than a mile away and truly love the convenience of a one-level space.
