Today's Featured Biography
James Kraus
I enjoyed a career as an English teacher in Rochester - at Franklin, East, Wilson Magnet (the old West).
My wife Elaine and I met at East H.S. She is a retired German and French teacher. In a 30 year marriage, we have enjoyed many travel, music, baseball, cultural, and family experiences together.
We have travelled to China, Germany, New Zealand, Czech Republic, South Africa, and to 49 of our states and Puerto Rico. New York City, Puerto Rico, and the great West have been our favorite spots in our country.
Elaine loves singing and is active in choral groups. One of her choirs even performed in San Francisco's philharmonic hall this summer. She is also a fine jazz styled pop singer. We have enjoyed seeing many top performers: T. Bennett, R. Clooney, M. Torme. Living near downtown, we also enjoy our great Rochester International Jazz Festival.
I play a lot of competitve softball in local senior leagues and tournaments. My more competitive teams did well this year. I'm an outfielder most of the time, but also play some catcher, 1B, rover and DH.
We both take courses and teach at Oasis, a national program for people over 50. Locally it's run in the old Sears Bldg. on Monroe Ave. Elaine and I recently took a course on WWII. She has taken Italian while teaching French and folk dancing. This fall I will be teaching a 6 part course on LBJ (Roots, Success, Failure)and a 3 part course on Sinatra (his roots and the 1940's).
It has been fun to maintain and renew contact w/ JMHS classmates and our former students too through the years. We had fine careers and have enjoyed retirement too.

Unfortunately my wife Elaine, passed away last summer after a long battle with metastatic breast cancer. Even in her last four + years of medical treatment, we traveled widely - back and forth across the USA, to Italy (+Sicily), France Spain, and to California and New York City several times. She continued to sing in several choral groups including the Irondequoit Chorale. I appreciated the support of many JMHS classmates at the time of her passing.
I have continued to travel since her passing; Bryce and Zion Nat'l Parks, NYC, California, the South. Next week I will go to Minnesota for the Senior National Games as a softball player. I will travel to the Csrribean or someother warm locale in the winter. I also read widely and listen to a variety of jazz, Broadway and classical music.
I am adjusting well with the help of wonderful friends and family
