Judean Hawkins Schmidt

2023 High School Reunion 61st – Judean Hawkins (Schmidt) Update

The years have not slowed down. We still live in Henderson, NV. Our grandchildren were the reason we moved from CA, but that is where they now live.

Our son Sam is still a partial Indy Car team owner. He sold the majority to McLaren. The team has three full time drivers, # 5 Pato O’Ward, #6 Felix Rosenquist, #7 Alexander Rossi and #66 for the 2023 Indy 500--Tony Kanaan. We were in Indy to watch all four qualify in the first three rows for the 500. Huge accomplishment.

The foundation Sam founded after his 2000 accident—CONQUER PARALYSIS NOW- has grown so much in helping people with disabilities to improve their daily life. Please check out DRIVEN Neuro-Recovery Center, Las Vegas via google, Instagram, etc In May 2023, CPN purchased a large building in Indianapolis, and it will be renovated to become the central hub for more Neuro Recovery Centers.

Both of our grandchildren graduated from Pepperdine University. Sam gave the commencement speech at Spencer’s graduation April 2022. It’s worth a listen. His speech begins at the 26 minute mark https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8WK88EQSM8’

Yes, we are very proud of what Sam is accomplishing. He is completely dependent on others. He is not able to move a finger, but his mind never stops. His wife, Sheila is a very strong angel! We are also proud of the parenting job they have done in raising our two wonderful grandchildren

Savannah experienced the world in her travels for a non profit to third world countries, and just had a baby girl May 13, 2023. Spencer became a very good artist at Pepperdine, but is taking his turn at driving a race car in the Skip Barber School of Racing– we did not get a vote on that decision.

We owned a small home in Capistrano Beach, CA from 1989 to 1999. We sold it and then bought it back from the same people 17 years later in 2017. We wish we could spend more time there because it’s so close to Savannah and her husband, Adam as of April 2021. We are great grandparents now, so it’s even more a reason to spend more time with our beautiful London Mae.

We are looking forward to the reunion and appreciate the time and effort of those that are making it happen.

Marv Schmidt, a Clatonia graduate and I were married in 1964. We moved from Lincoln to Los Angeles in 1968. Automotive businesses kept us busy until 2000. We moved to Henderson, NV in 1999 to be close to our two grandchildren.

Auto racing has been a large part of our lives since we went to the Omaha drags on our honeymoon - guess I knew what a ride I was getting into. Over the years we have truly experienced "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat".

Our son, Sam has been involved with Indy Cars since 1996, winning the Vegas race in 1999. Sam Schmidt Motorsports won the coveted Indy 500 Pole position in 2011. Watch #77 on the circuit this year. SSM has also won 5 Firestone Indy Lights Championships. We are very proud of his efforts shown at www.samschmidt.org. and www.samschmidtmotorsports.com

Our two grandchildren, Savannah and Spencer, live close by and bring us unbelievable joy and blessings.

We always enjoy our visits to Nebraska, but have never missed the winters.
