Philip Lewis

After High School I worked in a transmission repair shop and finally decided there has got to be a better way to make a living. I decided to go Cape Fear Community College and two years later I had an Associates Degree; Instrumentation Technology. I got a job at Wright Chemical in Acme as an Instrument/Electrical Technician. Stayed there for about six years and then went to Corning Inc., as an Instrument/Electrical Technician. I was there for about six years and lost my job when they had cut backs. I then worked part-time with New Hanover County Fire Services as a paid firefighter/driver operator. After about a year I got a job at International Paper, through Regent Security, in the Safety Department with a title of Fire Protection Coordinator/Technician. After two years I changed jobs and worked at Louisiana Pacific as an Instrument/Electrical/Electronic Technician. I stayed there for two years then got hired on at Progress Energy, Brunswick Nuclear Plant as an Instrument/Controls Electrician. I am hoping to retire from there.

During all of this time, I am in my second marriage. During the first, I had twin girls, Madison and Casey; they will be eleven shortly going on eighteen, if you know what I mean. My second marriage is to the best woman in the world. She is a Chemical Engineer at a local manufacturer and she graduated from Virginia Tech. GO HOKIES!!! She has converted me. We have a two year old girl; Sydney and a newborn Savannah.

I am also a volunteer firefighter with the Myrtle Grove VFD here in Wilmington. I joined the fire service while I was in High School (1987) and have progressed through the ranks and presently hold the office of Fire Chief. Myrtle Grove VFD has one of the largest districts to cover and is one of the busiest stations in New Hanover County. I have multiple state certifications as well as Emergency Medical Technician. I am gradually taking classes to get an Associates Degree in Fire Protection, just a couple more to go. Other than that, I have gotten a little bit rounder then I was in high school…okay maybe a lot more. I have enjoyed the experience of helping those in need and sadly hate to see those who are hurt or have lost their lives. You name it and I have probably seen it during my twenty plus years of service. Life can be short; so love your loved ones like tomorrow is the last day. Wear your seat belts; because they do save lives. I have seen the results of not wearing them too many times. Test your smoke detectors monthly and change your batteries twice a year; when you change your clocks is a good reminder. Be sure to practice your home escape plan.

If you want to find me; I am either at home, working, at the fire station, or fishing on my newly purchased center console. Be safe, look forward to seeing everyone at the reunion.
