Martie Todd Sirois
After gradution in '92 and a very short stint at college, I took some time off to concentrate on performing in professional musical theatre, where I met fabulous people and even a friend who was willing to let me stay in his NY apartment while I found a place to live. My travels took me to the Chelsea district of Manhattan, but over time I came to realize I was not only homesick, but couldn't afford to live there anyway! So I came back to Raleigh, continued performing, working, and met my husband who encouraged me to go back and finish school. So I did.
Matt & I married in June 1999. I got pregnant shortly after but lost my first child in a miscarriage. But, I went on to graduate with honors from Meredith College in May of 2000, while pregnant with my son, Jack. Jack was born in July of 2000 and I was able to put my Psychology degree to good use for a few years as a stay-at-home mom. (All the theories I learned in child psychology went right out the window, by the way.)
2 years later I gave birth to my 2nd child, Kate. During all this time my husband was teaching middle school language arts & coaching track in the Wake County Public School System, but wasn't really happy there. His true passion was cooking - he grew up cooking at his Grandfather's resort in Rhode Island.
In 2004 Matt & I had the opportunity to purchase a failing restaurant in downtown Wendell, where we live. With some tweaking, the restaurant/art gallery was up and running and Matt's been cooking & running the show there happily ever since. He also caters. I enjoy very much having a husband at home who can cook & clean better than me ;-) Our restaurant is called The Gallery Cafe. You can check out our website & menu at www.gallerycafewendell.com
Although I help out at the cafe from time to time, my primary career is working as the Director of Wendell Baptist Preschool. I have been there since 2002, where I have also enjoyed being able to send my children and watch them as they grow in a social setting before sending them off to public school - yikes, I'm geting old.
February, 2006 brought our 3rd child, Charlie, who at 9 lbs. 15 oz. (and 2 weeks early) was nicknamed "Bubba, the biggest baby in the Rex nursery" during Feb. of 06. I've had back problems ever since...True to the 3rd child syndrome, Charlie has been laid back and ultra-cool so far.
Jack, our 7-year-old, enjoys taking piano lessons, bike riding, reading & math, any and all sports, and is developing quite a nice singing voice.
Kate, our 5-year-old enjoys taking ballet, tap, and Tae Kwon Do. She's a little pistol. She also inherited a dramatic flair from her mother, and is fascinated with performing on stage in any capacity.
I continue to perform in local theatre when I can. My last couple of shows have been "Divas!" (2007, RLT), "Follies" (Phyllis) (2002, Meredith College), and "Sunday in the Park with George" (The Old Woman) (1999, Meredith College). Interestingly enough, I played the role of "Laurey" in Oklahoma! at Raleigh Little Theatre in 1998 - a role I played in a 5th grade elementary school production and had the pleasure of performing the role again at RLT with my fifth grade teacher in the audience! What a joy that was to see her smiling face again.
I also currently sing with 2 a capella groups that travel around NC and the coast. One of the groups I sing with is called "The Oakwood Waits." We are a Christmas caroling group and are available for hire during the Christmas season. In addition to singing in the homes of many wonderful folks, we have sung in places such as Biltmore Estate, The White House (twice), The Governor's Mansion, the N.C. Zoo, and Manteo, NC. We have a couple of CD's out. You can visit our website at www.oakwoodwaits.com
I also sing with a group called Stone Soup, and have sung backup vocals for a local band called "Caleb Grace." More on that at www.calebgrace.com
I also enjoy vacationing with my family in Sunset Beach, NC. Between all these high school websites, I've caught up with a few friends from the past and it has been great! Please drop me an e-mail sometime. I'd love to hear from anyone! You can also look me up or contact me through facebook.com.
