Today's Featured Biography
Heather Jacklin Neal
Greetings to all near and far.
After high school, I attended Appalachian State, where I received a B.S. in Elementary Education in 1993. I met my husband Michael at Appalachian, and we were married in 1996. Michael teaches 5th grade at Carolina Christian in Weaverville. Throughout college, I spent my summers as a counselor at Camp Daniel Boone Boy Scout Camp in Canton, NC and made friends from all over the country.
I've been teaching 5th grade for 15 years, and I really enjoy my career, but also my summers! I taught at Weaverville Elementary for 8 years, then moved up the street to North Windy Ridge as our 5th grade relocated to the new 5-6 school.
Our daughter Meredith was born in 2001, and then Katherine came along in 2004. While teaching full time and being Mom, I was able to complete my Masters Degree in Education (WCU 2003) with lots of support from my husband and parents. I call the MaEd my 2nd child -- my long labor!
Our family enjoys tent camping, hiking, reading, and community service. This grown up Girl Scout is a Brownie leader, of course. This fall Katherine will join our multi-age troop as a Daisy Scout. Our family is very involved with the church of my childhood, the Lutheran Church of the Nativity in Arden. I've taught Sunday School and led VBS groups for several years.
Many years ago I became involved with Relay for Life with my school. Teaching with so many cancer survivors deepened my commitment to fighting this disease, and each year has presented greater opportunities for leadership in my community. This year I was the co-chair of the Weaverville Relay while continuing my role as school team captain.
I count my many blessings each and every day. Wishing my very best to all of you, and I look forward to seeing folks at the reunion.
