Annieearl Dirden
Hello All,
I'm so excited about the plans that are underway for our 10th year Reunion (KUDOS!! Cynthia Lee-Bell for contacting me). I don't know about you all, but it seems just like yesterday we were walking down the "breeze ways" of ELZY.
After graduation, I attended Jackson State University (JSU) for five years (every fall, spring & summer) where I received two undergraduate degrees, B.S. in Elementary Education (K-5) and B.S. in Special Education (K-12), pledged membership and dedication to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., experienced lifelong experiences (good and bad, mostly good) and gained friendships I truly value. As far as making the decision to double major, at the time, I had every intention on staying in Mississippi for the rest of my life and I knew SPED teachers made more money than Gen. Ed. teachers, but I didn't want to just major in SPED for fear I would be able to handle the profession. Basically, I wanted to keep my options open and have a back up plan, at least at the time I thought I was. Looking back, I probably could have taken a better and shorter route. However, I've been able to utilize both degrees.
I moved to Metro Atlanta, GA five days after graduating from JSU and been here every since. I'm working on my fifth year teaching. I taught third grade (general ed.) for three years, seventh grade (Special Ed. Resource: Language Arts & Social Studies or more like a Resource Officer) one year and is currently teaching sixth grade (special ed.--much better year than last year). I am co-sponsor of the SMMS dance team and the SCA Advisor.
Aside from teaching, I'm the recent & proud founder of Appealing Da'Siya Event Planning & Design, L.L.C., which is a company that plans parties, large or small within any budget. My clientele is steadily growing. I'm so thankful for that. Hopefully, in another year or two, I'll be able to devote full attention to my business and step out of the education arena. But I have a back up plan, I'm in graduate school pursuing a Master's Degree in Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. My anticipated graduation date is in Sept. 07.
