Rochelle Wisoff Fields
There are so many cliches to begin a profile to catch up on the past half-century such as: Where did the years go? Time flies. When did I become my mother? All of them apply.
After graduation, I enrolled in the Kansas City Art Institute, dreaming of the famous artist I would become. To say I wasn’t prepared for the challenges ahead is an understatement. My instructors and I had vastly different views about art. I lasted two years.
Heaped on top of the demands of school, I married my husband Jan on November 28, 1971, five months after graduation.
In 1973 I worked as a caricature/portrait artist at Worlds of Fun. The following year our first son, Shannon was born.
By the time we paid off my student loans in 1981, we had two sons, having added Travis in 1978.
In 1983, we added Christian, son number three to our growing family.
I was able to be a stay-at-home mom for the better part of the next 19.
In 1992 I went to work for Hy-Vee as a cake decorator and later a sign maker. I retired in 2015.
Our first grandchild, Olive was born March 30.2011. And our second, Elsie was born November 12, 2017.
In 2011 I discovered a passion for writing. I’ve had five books published since then: an anthology of short stories, 3 historical novels about a Jewish family at the turn of the century in Eastern Europe and, later, in Kansas City. My coffee table companion to the novels, with short stories, excerpts and illustrations, debuted in 2016.
Currently, my two unpublished novels "What the Heart Wants" and "Last Dance with Annie", a fictionalized version of my own struggles with anorexia, are looking for homes.
Besides writing, I’m enjoying painting in watercolors, many of which are for sale on my art page.
I’m blessed to be in good health, working out or swimming on a daily basis.
There you have it. Fifty years of my life in a nutshell.
