Today's Featured Biography
Shelly Hess
I moved to San Diego my sophomore year in high school. It was the biggest culture shock of my life. As much as I missed graduating with all of you, I made the best of life in California. I graduated from Mar Vista High School in 1990.
I started my college career at Southwestern College, a local community college. Originally, I was just hoping to earn an AA degree, but that all changed after I took my first sociology class. I immediately put myself on the track to become a community college professor. I transferred to the University of California, Riverside and earned a BS in sociology in 1994. Although I graudated with honors I was not accepted to the Ph.D. programs I applied to. In 1995 I entered the Masters of Public Health program at San Diego State University. By the end of my first semester, I realized I was not a behaviorist and transfered back to sociology. I earned an MA in sociology in 1998. Along the way to my masters degree I discovered post secondary education. Long story short, I publsihed a few articles and a chapter in a book, taught sociology in the community college for a few years, became a research analyst, entered a doctoral program and then was hired for my first administrative position in 2002. I earned my doctorate in higher education leadership from the University of Nebraska in December 2008. Currently I am in my dream job, Dean of Curriculum and Instructional Services for the San Diego Community College District.
My personal life has not been so successful. I got married young, divorced by 30, and have been in dating hell since.......fortunately, single life is treating me well. I have a lot of fun when I am not working or volunteering...
