Today's Featured Biography

Karen Kihlman

On 4/29/1963 I began what would become a 45 year
career with Northwest Orient Airlines. For some reason or
another hopping on an airplane and leaving Minnesota for
New York City did not seem foolhardy or farfetched. I recall
the cab ride from Idlewild to Astoria, Queens during which
the driver cautioned me about not living in Flatbush. As I
hadn't a clue it wasn't a problem. As soon as I could I moved
to Manhattan where I eventually lived close enough to work
that I could walk.
In 1973 I packed up and moved to the other coast where
I spent 17 years in Foster City, Ca. I transferred to the
reservation department in S. F. and when that closed I became
a ticket agent at SFO. And in December of 1990 I packed up
again and moved to Minnesota. I finished up my stint with
NWA 8/29/2008 and I have not looked back.
I love to travel, good thing, eh?, and will readily admit that
I was truly in the right place at the right time as far as a
career in the airline biz. And I was very lucky to be able to
retire when I wanted and on my terms, especially in light of
the chaotic nature of the business today. I look forward to
more travel and the continued pursuit of all the things that
I have enjoyed over the years.
