Today's Featured Biography
Kevin LaPorte
After highschool I joined the Marines. Spent 4 years on active duty and 1 in the reserves at Selfridge. If I had a "do over" I would have stayed in and made a career of the military. The United States Marine Corps is fine institution for wanderers like me.
After the Marines I went to Macomb Community College where I earned my Associates Degree. I then transferred to Northern Michigan University because it was least expensive school in Michigan at the time where I earned a Bachelor's Degree. From there I got a full scholarship to Ohio Univesrity and earned my Masters Degree.
After studying I went to work at Ford Motor Company. As soon as my student loans were paid off I quit and starting chasing real money working for suppliers to Ford. Eventually I landed in MaCallen, Texas where I stayed for four years.
In 2006, with a 5-year old and 3-year old I quit automotive, sold my house, loaded a shipping container and drove two cars to Miami. Loaded everything on a ship and moved to Nicaragua.
My first job was at a brewery working working as a consultant in their main distribution center. That lasted a year and I started a carpentry shop and started working with tropical hardwoods. Here is where it gets really interesting... I sold it and went to work for the new owners. After three years they went bankrupt and so I bought it back. in 2009 I sold shares and took on partners.
The company is called Centroamericana de Desarrollo and has a subsidiary named DUSA, which means tree in the local indiginous language. Until last year I ran both locations. At present I am mainly focused on the subsidiary which is charged with extraction and primary processing (trees to logs to boards). I am living in a very remote area of Nicaragua and spend most of my time in the field. It rains 8 months out of the year and I go days eating nothing but rice and beans. I'm getting a bit old for this kind of work but for the moment I am exactly where I am supposed to be.
We produce decking, hardwood flooring and doors. We export 100% of our products and demand is far greater than our ability to supply. We made it through the economic downturn by actually buying equipment at auction in the US as wood manufacturers were going out of business. I love honest capitalism.
Anyway, that's my story. I doubt I'll be making it back for the reunion. I really wanted to but it's not looking likely. I do not make it back to Michigan much (twice in the last 6 years and both times for funerals). I hope you all have a wonderful time.
Finally, I would like to thank all my classmates that have worked so hard to pull this thing together. It was very kind of you to go through all this trouble. I was not a real socialable person back in highschool and it sure would have been nice to get reaquainted with some of you and get to know those of you that I never did back then. Adios.
