Today's Featured Biography
Mary Koren Ahern
After graduating from Pontiac Northern in 1959, I went to Oakland University. I had always wanted to be a nurse, but Mel Larimer, our choir director, asked me why I didn't consider teaching. So, that's what I did. I graduated from O.U., then known as M.S.U.O., in 1963, with a degree in Russian Education, of all things! Then I went on the the University of Michigan, to earn a M.A. in Education.
In September, 1964, I married Owen Ahern, whom I had met at Pontiac Motors, where I had worked during the summers while in college. Four days after we were married, I began my teaching career at Madison Junior High, which is right next door to Northern. I taught English and social studies, since Russian wasn't offered.
I taught until 1969, when our first daughter, Heather, was born. I was a stay-at-home mom for 5 years, when Shannon, our second daughter was born.
When Shannon was in school, I started substitute teaching. As you probably remember, kids give substitutes a bad time! So, I accepted a job in school sales (selling textbooks). Now I've been with three publishers, as a sales rep, district manager and consultant marketing manager. It's a lot of fun. I've met many wonderful people, and traveled all over our country. Our oldest daughter, Heather, became a teacher, and then came into publishing with me. She was a consultant for a few years, until she presented us with our first grandson, Joey.
We now have three wonderful grandchildren: Joey (2004), Norah (2004), and Benjamin (2007). Everyone lives nearby.
We've been very blessed to have had our family close. My parents died a few years ago, but we have a lifetime of memories of both of them and what loving parents and grandparents they were.
I retired on June 30th, 2007, to spend more time with all of my family. Owen and I have a condo in Fort Myers, Florida, which we greatly enjoy. Our youngest daughter, Shannon, and her husband, Dan, have a house in Naples. Everyone is in good health, and our children and grandchildren are a joy.
I look forward to seeing classmates at luncheons and reunions and look forward to sharing memories together.
