Today's Featured Biography
Marsha Graves VanLente
I had always planned to be a teacher after graduation from Catholic, but of course, life took other pathways. After one year at Community College and the birth of one son, I was a full-time mom until David turned three. At that time I started work for Household Finance for three years until David started first grade and then I quit that job to complete my sophomore year at college. Shortly after getting an Associate degree I began work at the paper mill as a receptionist/phone operator in customer service. This was supposed to be a temporary job -- a temporary job that lasted 30 years through positions in human resources, accounting, wood procurement and back to customer service where I ended my 11-year position as the inside sales rep for the 11-state western region. When Sappi/S.D. Warren consolidated all the mill site customer service departments and moved them to Maine, I was able to take early retirement in July, 2004. AGE and years of service were a definite advantage.
During all this time I was a den mother, scouting coordinator at Bluffton School, PTA president, band parent, part of the liturgical group that began the guitar Mass at St. Francis and a member of the College Repertory Dance Tour Company for two and a half years. Somewhere in here I got divorced, learned to ride a horse and worked full time while taking classes full time at Aquinas to earn my BA in Communication Interdisciplinary in 1992. Just before retirement my girl friend and I hiked to the bottom on the Grand Canyon to Phantom Ranch. We plan to go again in 2014.
My partner, John Shepherd (Class of 1960), and I have been together 25 years this August and between us have six children, 14 grandchildren and a great grandchild due in June 2013. We also have had custody of his 10-yr old granddaughter since she was five. We've camped all over the Upper Peninsula and are both active in Muskegon Civic Theater where he builds sets and I paint sets, do set decorating and some assistant directing. We currently attend St. Francis de Sales where Sydney just made her First Communion on May 5, 2013. Both of us have lived all our lives in Muskegon (except when John was in the army and stationed in Hawaii).
For an old broad it's been a busy life. Plans are to keep on keeping busy so I don't rust and can still get on a horse.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
