Today's Featured Biography
Stan Conrad
I started w/Buick in 65, as soon as I was 18. Lost my college deferment and rec. my draft notice that year. I become a SGT in the Infantry, took a Commission in Armor Branch and returned to the Flint area after two tours of duty. Due to labor laws I was still employed by Buick Div. and ended up doing 32 years there, retiring 01/01/97 w/32 years of service. The last 25 yrs at Buick were in the Engineering Facility. The plant closed shortly afterwards, perhaps they should have paid me more to stay, LOL.
I joined the USAR in the 70's and did one more active duty tour, retiring as a field grade officer with 36.5 years service. (Actually, they told me to go away!)
I was lucky and found my "soul mate" in 69, Mary is/was a Vietnam widow with 3 small children. She knew what she was up against with me having two race cars, 3 motorcycles, a tow truck and a bunch of firearms and fishing rods. Best "deal" I ever made!
I gave up drag cars last year as well as the last of the MC. I had 3 retina detachments in a 13 month window - so going 175 MPH by braille does not seem prudent anymore. Besides, I was losing my "edge", last track championship was in 2008. I felt it best to leave that part of my life behind me.
update #1 = bought another MC in 2015 like a Dumb A$$. I need to give it to a grand son before I hurt myself again! GONE, did not hurt myself. :)
Mary and I still live in Montrose township for 6 months or so each year, we live in SWFL for the other 6 months. Lots of snowbirds there, Dennis/Judy Rush are up the road, with Lyle & Carol a bit farther. Millie is down the road, but I have not seen her in decades. Anymore of you hanging out down here in the Fort Myers area? I think Phyllis is, not sure.
I talk as much as I type anymore. So be aware of that when/if we should meet again. I recommend ear plugs! I miss all of you, and to those that have gone on ahead, we (I) have not forgotten our friends.
update #2. I still compete on the national level with shotgun (I gave up rifle in 92/93 when I did not get the National Team). With reduced vision it is more difficult of course. I still manage a few awards at the NSSA World Vintage (guns, not shooters) Championship each year. In addition the local Club Championship for the last 4 years.
update #3, Now have six (6) great grandsons! Curtain climbers all.
Due to the fact that we live so close to the Cruise Ship port we are able to take advantage of some super deals for retired veterans. Get to feel "special" for a short while w/o the short bus!
