Retired Michigan State Trooper, an attorney, and ran human resources for Ottawa County, among other roles.

•BACKGROUND: Waalkes started at the Michigan State Police fresh out of college and worked her way up through the ranks to retire as a major in 2002, at one time running the MSP's former Office of Organizational Development in charge of training and human resources. Afterward, she was a private attorney specializing in labor law before working in the administration of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department, as director of security for the Michigan Court of Appeals, as a private consultant, and then as head of human resources for Ottawa County. Last year, she was named health management director at the Office of State Employer before taking over as state employer on April 26. She also previously served on the Employment Relations Board.
•EDUCATION: Bachelor's, Michigan State University, 1975. Law degree from what is now the Western Michigan University Cooley Law School, 1991.
