Steven Spofford

In 1977 I began with Honeywell information systems at an entry level position in software distribution. In the 78 blizzard I spent 10 days there as 128 had been shut down and I thank God I bought that ounce of grass with me and the liquor store across the street stayed open. I had the entire place to myself aside from two security guards who were either very heavy or older than water. Neither of the above was much of a consern so I spent my time in the computer room smoking pot and playing Star Treck on the level six computer. I think I made Admiral five times in one day?
That time was a state of emergency and I completed probably thirty system generations on the level 62 computer while I was there and because it was a state of emergency I made over $700.00 the time I spent working?
When the highway opened I returned to my parents house in Wenham where all the shoveling had been finished and a real bed waited for me. I'd been sleeping on the vice presidents couch the entire time I was there and using his phone to make my calls back home.
I used that $700.00 dollars to take a place in Hyde Park no more than fifteen minutes away from work.
Over the course of the next ten years I was promoted twice and wound up in the tetnical assistance center before getting laid off in "88".
I moved back to Beverly and took a position with Avnet Computer in Peabody for the next twelve years till I was transphered to their corperate headquarters in Chandler Arizona.
With the raise I'd been given for relocating
I was able to give away everything I owned up there so the move was easy. I bought new stuff down here so it was like a new start. I'd been given an additional weeks vacation to travel down here and find a place to live and during that week I bought another car. Both were waiting when I touched down at Sky Harbor Airport. I took a cab to the car dealership
and a ride in my new car to this place.
Eventually Avnet ran into tough times and I was laid off in 2003 after sixteen years, but they did give me a severance package I can't complain about.
Currently I'm working as a greeter at Fry's Supermarket where I do nothing but say Hi and Bye to folks all day. Gets sort of boring after three or four days but the monies good and the fact that I have no responsibilities is great.
All I wanted from life was a good ride and prayers have been answered. I think staying single was the very best thing I ever decided to do and even though marrige I'm sure works for some, it just isn't right for me...
