Lila Fisher Hilgeford

My family moved to Salem the summer before I began 6th grade at Oak Park. What a change that was from Brubaker, the 1-room school I had previously attended. I was the only girl in my 5th grade class along with Marvin Sipes, Richard Anderson, Larry Storment, Bob Crippen, Sherill Duncan, Bob Heavener, Wayne Vaughn -- and I hope I'm not forgetting any others from our Class of 1956.
By the time we graduated, I was already working part-time for Bitzer Auto Sales and that summer was offered a position as their automotive accountant. It was great to be paid for that learning experience! During 1957-60 I also completed a graduate program of correspondence courses all relating to accounting and management.
In 1961 I married my first and only serious boyfriend and we are still enjoying being "happy ever after"! After Ted moved me to Arkansas, I worked briefly as a cost accountant for General Electric Credit Corp. before becoming a full-time mother.
In 1964 I was first paid for a task I've been doing ever since -- that is Ted's secretary. The part-time salary came from the State of Missouri Board of Probation & Parole; Ted's habit of telling me what to do did not end when that job did -- :-)
In 1967 I resumed some correspondence courses that led to a seasonal job of income tax preparation and carried over to some free lance accounting services in Hannibal, MO.
In 1970 we moved to Edina, MO and Ted and I again worked together for several years for the Second Circuit Juvenile Court. This evolved into my working towards and finally becoming certified as an Official Court Reporter for the State of MO Second Judicial Circuit Court -- a position I held for 17 years.
In 1998 I retired and loved it from the first day I got to linger over morning coffee and give up my high heels and pantyhose!! It afforded me more time for golf, bridge and the freedom to enjoy winters in AZ or spending time with our daughter in FL.
In 2005 we moved from N.E. MO to Columbia, MO where we are near our son and two grandsons which was a good decision.
We are so happy here and totally enjoy rooting for the Mizzou Tigers and attending numerous stage productions and concerts.
The summer of 2009 I made my fifth European sightseeing/concert tour with the Mark Twain International Chorale, this time visiting the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. Previous trips included Italy, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. I am amazed that I've been blessed with these thrilling experiences.
