Today's Featured Biography
Avanelle Harmon Mercer
I was born in a little village named Cornish in the oil fields south and a little west of Xenia. My father owned a little country grocery store and the family lived in the back part of the store when I was born. One cold November morning when I was 5 months old, mother got up to pump up the stove to make breakfast when it exploded and we got out with only the clothes on our back. My dad carried me through the flames in a wooden box which he put his head down on me to make it through. They lost everything they owned except the car which neighbors were able to push away from the building. My mother was already pregnant with my brother Marion but everything worked out ok. Daddy took a job with Halliburton and we then lived in a company house in the oil fields and the first memory I have is of a gas flare burning constantly in our back yard. We moved into Salem so I could begin first grade (no kindergarten then) at Central School. My grandkids don't believe that I walked a mile to school every day but in those days, there were lots of kids in our immediate neighborhood and we all walked together. I was thrilled when they built the new high school. That meant that we could use the old school as a Junior High. We got to have hot lunches daily and I was glad as I was tired of sack lunches by then. High school brought on its new set of problems, mainly for me, those horrible gym suits we girls had to wear, take home on weekends and wash and Miss Dennis giving us demerits if we failed to do so. I am sure the boys did not have that strick regimen to handle. I enjoyed Latin under Miss Jones and it has been my lifesaver so many times. I had always been a tomboy and played basketball with the neighbor boys every night after school and it irked me that I had to be a guard and could not pass over the center line and do any shooting. I also played baseball with the kids in my neighborhood and was pretty versatile at any position. I had dreams being on the womens leagues up north, but then when it got right down to it, I married a ball player instead and practically lived at the ball park many years.

Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
