Today's Featured Biography
Betty Maxey Cook
After attending a one-room country grade school, you can imagine what an adjustment it was for a 12 year old to start her Freshman year at S.C.H.S. in the fall of 1952. Thankfully, I had an older sister (Wanda graduated in 1953) to help me learn my way around.
After graduation in 1956, I began working as Secretary-Receptionist for March Drilling Company. I also began dating a young man from Salem named Fred Cook (an S.C.H.S. graduate in 1955). We married in December, 1957, at the First Baptist Church in Salem and celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2007!
Fred's employer, Texaco, transferred us to south Louisiana in 1971 and we have been residents down here ever since. We love the sub-tropical climate, although not the hurricanes. But, we still miss the Salem we fondly remember.
Our oldest son, Fred Jr., lives here in Lafayette with his wife, Kerri, and their son, Blake, who is a Freshman at Lafayette High this year. His older son lives in Nashville, TN where he is enrolled as a Freshman at Middle Tennessee State University.
Our youngest son, Brian Matthew, lives in Houma with his wife, Brittanie. They have no children thus far - just two dogs and a cat.
Fred & I still work part-time, which we both thoroughly enjoy. He is a Consulting Safety Engineer and I am an Assistant to a Real Estate Broker. In our free time, we like to go to our cabin on Toledo Bend Lake and do a little boating and fishing, though sometimes it seems like just another place to go and do yard work, house work, cooking, laundry, and other regular maintenance items, etc.
We still go to Salem two or three times a year to visit my family members, and will definitely plan to make our 55th Class Reunion next year.
