Today's Featured Biography
Katharine Harman Sherman
Kathie Sherman has been enjoying her third career as an Intercultural Relocation Consultant since 2004, after returning to the USA from China. She had accompanied her husband to Shanghai, where he had been relocated by his corporation. They enjoyed over four years in China, three plus in Shanghai and one in Beijing. While they had traveled quite a lot, both for business and pleasure, it was their first overseas assignment and she fell in love with the adventure of living overseas. Upon her return, she resisted giving up the adventure and challenge. Then she discovered that she could share her enthusiasm, and keep in touch with expatriate living, by sharing her experiences and helping others prepare for their relocation to China. Keeping this experience fresh also contributes to another part of her cross cultural career, that of assisting Asian and European families relocating to the USA from overseas.
She has written a booklet -- Daily Living in Shanghai as an Expatriate -- which continues to be a “work in progress”, as it is updated immediately upon learning new information from Shanghai. Well aware of the pace with which China is changing, she keeps in close touch with friends still there and returns often to update her knowledge of living conditions, schools, western medical clinics, shopping, and services available for expatriates.
She has also written a second, more generic, booklet -- Daily Living in China as an Expatriate -- to serve as a guide when clients may be moving to a Chinese city other than Shanghai. She then prepares a separate city report including daily living information she has researched, such as medical clinics, international schools, western food availability and expatriate social life opportunities. She has prepared reports for Suzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Ningbo, Xi’an, Qing Dao, Chongqing, Shenzhen, and several smaller cities. She has worked as a resource consultant with many firms specializing in overseas cross-cultural training.
In order to take advantage of the China opportunity, she retired from her job as a Media Negotiator, ending a 20 year career in the advertising industry in the Detroit area. She is married and has two grown children, each married, one living in western Michigan, one on the West Coast. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University in Mathematics and spent several years as a Scientific Computer Analyst in the aerospace industry in California, before relocating to the Detroit area in the 1970’s. She was born and raised in suburban Chicago.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
