Joanne Price Hicks

I married Wayne Hicks, who lived in Eldorado, on December 31, 1957 in Corinth, Mississippi. Wayne was getting ready to go to the State Police Academy and he wanted to get married before he left because he said when he graduated he didn't know where he would be stationed. We moved to McLean County in central Illinois when he got out of the academy and have lived in the county ever since. We moved to Bloomington in April, 1971. Our first child, Wendy, was born on May 15, 1968 and our son, Bradley, was born October 21, 1972. I worked for a while before the kids were born, but after they came I didn't work again. Wayne retired in 1991 with the rank of Sgt. after serving for 33 years on the Illinois State Police. I didn't want to be a couch potato so we took up ballroom dancing and took lessons for several years. Both the kids graduated from Illinois State University right next door in Normal. Wendy got her B.A in psychology, M.A. in psychology and M.A. in criminal justice from there and Brad got his B.S. in history. Wendy received her Ph.D. in criminal justice from Michigan State University, East Lansing, in 2001 and is a college professor in Louisiana. Brad is a network administrator and works for the Center for Human Services here in Bloomington. There are no grandchildren. Brad married his high school sweetheart 12 years ago and Wendy is single. Wayne and I don't dance as much as we would like because big bands are fading at a rapid rate. We travel a bit and have taken the kids to almost all the lower 48 states. When we get time we head south to see Wendy who lives in New Orleans. It's a fun place to visit, and since Wendy is very active in Mardi Gras we like to go for the festivities. We spent one winter there but decided it just isn't any place we'd like to call home. For our 50th wedding anniversary we took all the family to Walt Disney World for 8 days and had a wonderful time. Since our anniversary falls on New Year's Eve we had a special celebration at Epcot and the kids had it set up for Wayne and me to be honored during the dinner dance. We were introduced by the band leader and got to do a little solo for the crowd. It was a once in a lifetime event, for sure. Wendy is a scuba diver and she dived in the big tank at Disney World and swam among the sharks and the turtles. The people at the park treated us like royalty following her dive. We were taken upstairs to get a video of the event, then taken back stage and walked behind the buildings to get a close look at what the place is all about. It was a genuine treat and we all enjoyed it more than I can say. When Wayne and I are home we have two Yorkshire Terriers, Cookie and Molly, who keep us hopping. I guess after the kids grow up it's time to play with the puppies and we have a ball with these two.
