Larry Sanders

After High School, I graduated from Indiana Northern University with a Degree in Business Administration/Accounting. Through college I worked with Leo Cox Insurance and Income Tax Service. After graduation from Indiana Northern University, I was the Business Mgr. at Arlington Heights Library. I enlisted in Air Force in 1970, turned down a commission as an officer due to limited positions for Officers--specifically only opening was for navigators on B-52 bomber--not for me. Luckily, I was "trained" in Accounting & Finance, then assigned to Accounting & Finance Office at Blytheville AFB AR (a B52 base), treated very well as I was the only enlisted person with a degree in accounting. Later assigned to HQ US Air Forces Europe in downtown Wiesbaden AB, Germany. My job was to ensure the welfare of our Airmen throughout the Command which "forced" me to visit every base in the European command, then out to the remote communication sites where our personnel were located. I visited every Air Force Base in the command along with the numerous communications sites every year for the four years I was at the Headquarters base. It was a great job and I was able to visit every country in Europe that had an AF base or site. I re-enlisted with a nice bonus, returned to the US (Texas) and was re-trained as auditor. Most auditors were civilians or Officers, with only a few enlisted personnel in this position. Very unlike being in the military as we all called each other by the first name. After learning the "ins and outs" of auditing at Sheppard AFB TX, I was reassigned to Ramstein (again) and worked local audit at three bases in Germany. Then I was transferred to the main audit office for US Air Forces in Europe and found myself back on the road with audits all over Europe--many of the same locations I had visited a few years earlier. Nine years in the military was enough and I separated from the AF in Germany. Eight weeks later, I was back at my old job as a civilian earning twice (or more) than I had as an enlisted person. To make the story shorter, I stayed with the AF for a total of 48 years, retired as a civilian Deputy Commander. I learned a lot about air shows and now work part time managing military and civilian air shows with Herb Gillen Air Shows.
