Today's Featured Biography
Pauline Spanbauer
Ms. Spanbauer was born deaf and is a native user of American Sign Language. She is a third deaf generation carrier. During her childhood, Pauline was enrolled at mainstream Public Schools in Decatur, Illinois. She wore hearing aids since she was three and did not have sign language interpreters during classes, lectures, assemblies or plays. Pauline went to the National Technical Institute for the Deaf/Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York majoring in Art and Design. From there, she transferred to Gallaudet University and graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology.
Pauline was the first Deaf Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines. She taught Signing Exact English II classes for families and friends of the Southeast Asian Institute for the Deaf in Quezon City for a period of 2 years and 4 months. In 1977, she was a co-author of Sign as You Speak. In 1977-1978, Pauline volunteered teaching sign language for families and friends of the Hilda Knoff School for the Deaf in River Ridge, Louisiana. In 1978-1980, Pauline substituted ASL classes at New York University, New York and taught an ASL weekend retreat class at Morristown, New Jersey during the spring of 1980. Pauline taught ASL classes and lectured short topics to Families within the Family Sign Language Program at Kendall Demonstration Elementary School and Model Secondary School for the Deaf in Washington, D.C. from 1985 to 1999. During the summer of 2000, Pauline taught ASL classes to Federal Government workers at the Department of Commerce and Defense Logistics Agency. She also was a private ASL tutor to Montgomery County residents in the summer of 2001.
Pauline taught ASL off-campus for Gallaudet University ASL Literary Center and involved in a Mentor ship Training Program and substituted for ASL 3,4 class in 2002.
Pauline consulted interpreters and taught ASL Intermediate class at the First Baptist Church of Glenarden in Landover, Maryland and OMEC Corporation in 2003-2004. During 2004-2007, Pauline taught 3 years at Oakton High School in Vienna, Virginia, teaching American Sign Language 1, 2,and 3. Pauline has a hearing son and daughter, who are also native users of ASL. Pauline was a former member of the National Deaf Dance Theatre and taught ASL poems, dance/movement, sign-dance, and song interpretations. Pauline works ASL programs at Gallaudet.
