It is amazing how much can happen in 40 years. After graduating from high school I got married and raised 4 wonderful children that I love very dearly; Tony, Patrick, Lolita, and Jaime. For 20 years I was a stay at home mom which was one of my most difficult but most fulfilling jobs. During this time I was heavily involved in the community serving as PTO leader and volunteering in my children’s schools, Jr. Football league and cheerleading director.
In 1988, I began my career for the State of Illinois working with individuals with special needs. While working for the State Of Illinois, I continued to serve the community by serving as an executive board member for the NAACP, campaigning for local politicians including Senator Barack Obama and assisting the Justice Ministry of New Faith Baptist Church. In 2000, I resigned with the State and began a full time career at New Faith Baptist Church as the Outreach Coordinator.
My position as allotted me the greatest opportunity of bridging the gap between church and the community. Thru Faith and Health Fairs, providing school supplies, family read nights, feeding the homeless, and partnering with Habitit for Humanity to build one of the largest homes in the south suburbs. We have been able to assist communities such as Robbins, Ford Heights, Pembroke, Matteson along with other south suburban communities.
The greatest addition to my responsibilities is to coordinate foreign international missions. Through our Joseph Assignment Global Initiative we seek to help the world’s poorest children and their families. Thru such outreach we have been able to provide books for China, and over 500 orphans in India (monthly). Currently the Joseph Assignment is making a phenomenal impact in the villages of Ghana West Africa, thru our Living Well initiative we are striving to provide 20 wells in villages where children are dying everyday from unsafe water. Today we successfully have dug 6 wells.
In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my 2 beautiful grandchildren Jaquelyn and Sherman Jr, going to the theater, watching a good movie traveling, and having a good laugh with old and new friends. Living is what you get, but life is what you give.
So in the past 40 years of living, I must admit that I have had a wonderful life.
Looking Forward to Reconnecting,
Janice A. Smith-Gill
