Today's Featured Biography
Josie Watters Landon
I got my AAS in Physics and by BA in Chemistry at Idaho State University where I worked as the Chemistry Laboratory Technician. My senior year of college, I found out about Food Science. I love to cook and love science experiments so it was the perfect fit!
I got married in 1999 to Justin Kidd. We weren't married for long and that was long enough! In 2001, I met Tyson. We were friends for a long time before we started dating. In 2005, we got married in Vegas at the Excalibur Hotel. Only a few people attended, including our parents and siblings. Afterward, we came home to Shelley and threw a big BBQ. Two days later, we moved to Washington.
I began graduate school at Washington State University in August of 2005. My research project is on Astringency in Washington State University in Pullman, WA (about 7 miles from University of Idaho). Basically, I analyze wine chemically and hold sensory panels (have people taste it) to correlate what chemicals cause tastes/mouthfeel in the wine. It's been a lot of fun and I am now in the writing stage of my thesis. I will defend in August.
I was Chemistry Club president at ISU and am currently the Food Science Club president at WSU. We just got done with a huge event, Iron Chef WSU. In February, three student teams competed and the winner challenged the WSU Iron Chef last Saturday (April 14th). I emceed the preliminary student team competition and co-emceed the final competition. Approximately 700 people attended the final event. It was a lot of fun and a great way to introduce others to Food Science.
I was also a part of the Food Product Development Team at WSU. Last year, we won a nationwide competition with our product, Almond Dingers (single serve, microwaveable, gluten-free almond cake with frosting and coconut/almond topping). The team I worked with got to display our product at the IFT (Institute of Food Technologists) meeting in Orlando Florida last July. It was a lot of fun, and the conference was great! I got to meet my hero, Alton Brown from Good Eats on Food Network. He's such a great guy in person-- very funny. The showfloor was huge and there were free food samples everywhere. You don't need to pay for food when you go to IFT....
My husband and I will be moving back to Southeast Idaho in May (No kids-- just two kitties, Mocha and Charlie). I got a job at Basic American Foods in Blackfoot doing research and development. Basically, I will get paid to play with my food all day. Food science is so cool! We are currently looking for a house and Tyson is looking for a job (he's a computer guy). Things are exciting! See you all in July!
