Today's Featured Biography
Karl Wirkus
Currently: Deputy Commissioner - Operations, Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation, in Washington, DC. Living in Arlington, VA mostly but getting back to Boise when I can.
Started with Reclamation in 1981 while going to Boise State.
- 1985 moved to Jackson Hole as project geologist on Jackson Lake Dam reconstruction. Met Kerry Enderson at the golf course in Driggs. As a sideline guided fly-in float/fishing trips in Alaska 3-4 weeks/year.
- 1989 moved to Bend, OR to establish a mobile construction office. In 1990 Married Kerry at the top of Teton Pass and dragged her off to Bend. Based from Bend, managed major dam modifications in Asheville, NC, Atlanta, ID, and Hamilton, MT. In 1991 explored fishing potential in eastern Russia, USSR, back in 1993 with clients.
- 1993 moved to Washington, DC as Regional Liaison, Pacific Northwest Region
- 1994 Burley, ID - Deputy Area Manager, Pacific Northwest Region
- 1996 Klamath Falls, OR - Area Manager, Mid-Pacific Region (yes it was me who didn't allow irrigation in 2001 because of drought and endangered species act restrictions)
- 2001 Billings, MT - Deputy Regional Director, Great Plains Region
- 2003 Back to Boise - Deputy Regional Director, Pacific Northwest Region
- 2007 Washington DC - Deputy Commissioner - Operations
- January, 2009 waiting to learn who Secretary Salazar will nominate as my new boss.
Regardless eventually we will be back in Boise, on the River in Garden City. Fishing and boating out my back door, a hop skip and a jump to BRONCO football games, 18 easy miles to Bogus Basin, and I may even play golf again.
For now we are enjoying the urban experience, and were among the throng with tickets to the inauguration that didn't get past security
