4 years in the Maine Corps. Returned to Iowa 10/1980, lived with my brother on his farm near Bellevue, IA.
Got a job offer on a dairy farm in Alaska, November, 1981, been living in Alaska ever since. Delta Jct., AK initially, on the farm, then odd jobs for a year. Got into construction industry for four years, then got a job at a printing shop. Moved to Fairbanks area 1993, got a job as school bus driver, summers as tour bus driver in Denali National Park.
Semi retired 2010, got into farming as a past time, still doing that, cows, pigs, chickens. Make hay.
Latest turn is as a resident advisor at our local high school boarding center, being house parent to 100 boys and girls from across the state.
Greatest adventures? Participated in the Alaska Mountain Wilderness Classic race, 1987, 1988, 1991.
Also, wrecked my airplane in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and spent 4 years getting it out, succeeding with a 500 mile float trip down the Coleen, Porcupine, and Yukon Rivers during the fall of 2002.
I’ve had a grizzly bear get within 25’ of me in my first wilderness race.
I’ve been a volunteer fire fighter/EMT since 2010.
I volunteered with the Civil Air Patrol from 1994 through 2009.
I’ve been partnered up with Kat McElroy since 1992, with step daughter Bryn, step-grandchildren Leon, Aurora/Cosmo, and Olivia. step great grandchildren from Leon, Dustin and Hailey.
