William Roper

After graduation from Bass High, I went to work for Western Union Telegraph Co. where I worked for a little over 5 years. I started out as an office worker delivering mail, etc. and worked my way up the organization to designing and costing out basic communications systems when I left. While working full time, I attended Georgia State in the evening and earned a bachelors and masters degree in business administration with a major in accounting.

When Western Union reorganized, they eliminated my job and I went to work for the State of Georgia in the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget as a budget analyst. After about 3 years in the job, I established an in-house management consulting operation which performed organizational, systems, procedural, feasibility and other types of studies for the Governor, individual agency heads and legislative committees. As part of that responsibility, I organized planned and managed a number of task force efforts including Gov. Carter’s state reorganization in the early 1970’s. I retired after a little over 33 years with the state and helped another state retiree establish a governmental affairs firm that helps businesses do business with government. I retired in December 2008 after 11 years with that firm.

I married another Bass High graduate, Rebecca Studdard (Class of 1962) and we have been married for over 46 happy years. We have a son and a daughter who are both married and live nearby with their families. Between the two families we have 6 grandchildren-2 boys and 4 girls-ranging from 3 to 12 years old. We get together with them often and enjoy attending the grandkids’ many sports and school events.

We began attending the Smoke Rise Baptist church while living in Tucker and have continued to be active members for the last 38 years.

Rebecca and I have enjoyed running, having participated in many 5K and 10K races including Peachtree Road run that I have run 20 times and Rebecca ran 19 times. Although we no longer run races, we still enjoy exercising and work out 3-5 times a week. In addition, we enjoy gardening. Rebecca and I maintain our almost 3 acres with lots of grass, rose bushes and a variety of other shrubbery. Also, I plant a vegetable garden every spring. We have various fruit trees and fig, blueberry and blackberry bushes that have begun to produce pretty well..

We lived in the City of Atlanta in the Virginia-Highlands area and on Oakdale Road early in our marriage. But we then moved to Tucker and lived there and down the road in Stone Mountain for almost 30 years. We have been in Cumming for the last 11 years. We love Daytona Beach and vacation there every summer but over the years have traveled to Williamsburg, Charleston, Montana and Alaska. Most of our other travel has been elsewhere in Georgia or in neighboring southeastern states.
