Today's Featured Biography
Carlos Barbosa
I entered the U. S. Naval academy in July of 1985 and spent four action packed years earning my BS in Oceanography.
I graduated in May of 1989 attended follow-on schools for specialized training and reported to my first ship, USS TICONDEROGA CG-47 in April of 1990. The most significant part of the next three years besides completing the requisites for a Naval Officer was participation in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. After 38 months I caught a major break and was offered graduate school.
I attended the U.S. Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey California for 2 years and 2 months of what I considered to be very close to bliss. I earned my Masters in Computer Science and then returned to fleet duty after more follow-on schools.
In May of 1996 I reported to USS LEFTWICH DD-984 in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. (Two years in Paradise. Life is good!) I left Hawaii after having to participate in the decommissioning of LEFTWICH. (Decommissioning a ship is emotionally like of having to say goodbye forever to a trusted friend.)
I arrived in Pascagoula Mississippi, in September 1998 to serve aboard USS YORKTOWN CG-48, sister ship to my first assignment. On board YORKTOWN I had the opportunity to participate in multiple Drug Enforcement operations and travel in and around South America. (Again, Life is good. In fact, in the Navy I have had the fortune of going completely around the world and setting my foot on every continent with the exception of Africa and Antarctica.) When my tour was up on YORKTOWN, I decided to leave the Surface Community, (meaning I am no longer a ship driver) and became an Engineering Duty Officer.
I spent four years at the Supervisor of Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, working as the Test Officer for new construction ships. The first two years I was the LHD-7 Test Officer and then I spent the final two years as the Aegis Test officer testing DDG 88,89,91,93,95 and most of 97. Though, all of my naval career had been fun, the four years working at SUPSHIP was extremely rewarding and is presently at the top of my list for best assignments. (And no, Pascagoula is not the center of all civilization but it was still a lot of fun and I now consider that area home. Biloxi, Mobile, and New Orleans are all very close.)
In September of 2004 I transferred to Norfolk, Virginia to the Board of Inspection and Survey. There, I was an inspector for combat systems on all naval ships. Though it lacks the challenges of my other assignments it did give me the ability to work on my MBA, which I did not have in my other jobs.
I met my wife while stationed in Pascagoula and we were married in December of 2004. I took July and August of 2005 off from classes to go on our honeymoon in Oahu and Maui and to have PRK surgery to correct my vision. That short break was then unexpectedly extended by hurricane Katrina. Both of my houses on the gulf coast took some damage and I was stuck for three weeks in the Pascagoula area making emergency repairs and ensuring my wife was safe in our home.
In March of 2006 I returned to the Supervisor of Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi and am serving as the LHD Test Officer. My wife and I have started a little real estate venture in which we are buying, remodeling and renting houses in our local area. We now have three houses.
Hope to see a lot more of you sign in to the web site.
