Today's Featured Biography
Joan Iacabone Murray
I was born December 10, 1938, to Theodore and Sarah Iacabone. My mother was born in Pueblo, Colorado. My father at 5 came to Pueblo, Colorado, from Agnone, Italy. I am first generation to America.
As a student at Central High, my teachers encouraged reading and library research. This facilitated my English development. My parents spoke Italian to my grandparents and then English to me. Therefore, English was my secondary language.
My friends and I had competition games. Who could read the most books? We would go to the public library, check out, and read four books a week. We were, also, on the Italian radio station weekly. This developed our abilities to compete.
The library expanded my to higher levels. The end result was the Joint-Honor scholarship, 4 years of paid tuition and books to a Colorado College.
Now the college environment mandated high caliber research. I acquired an Associate of As degree, a Bachelor of Arts degree, two Master of Arts degrees, and a Specialist in Education, School Psychology.
As a member of the "sandwich" generation, these degrees provided for my family holding jobs: English teacher, business Instructor, Counselor, Reading Instructor Zweibrucken,Germany), School Psychologist, and In service coordinator of School District #60 of Pueblo,Colorado. Here, I assisted the Superintendent of schools to individualize the handicapped child into the regular classrooms (k-8).
My education was obtained with scholarships. The US Department of Research granted tuition to acquire a Master's degree from the University of Denver.
I am the only female from my Italian background family who went to college.
In 1977, my family moved to Buena Vista, Colorado. I am currently licensed in 3 fields: Education, Real estate, Insurance, and the Mutual Funds.
My name is on the Wall of Tolerance in Washington,D.C. for involvement with young people in a storefront school in Buena Vista, Colorado. Sixteen young people were in this storefront school. These young people moved to significant outstanding job positions. I used a curriculum I developed, "the Listening Rainbow curriculum. This program operated without grants.
Based on the above, the United States Senate thanked me for working with rural youth. the US Department of Research paid my tuition to Denver University to renew my teaching credentials when my own kids were in college.
Remember, I am from the "sandwich" generation" of which you are a part. So, I had to spread it thin. The Commissioners of education for the State of Colorado wrote me a letter of commendation for my work in Education.
My heart-felt interest and service to education has been present, regardless of my employment area.
I returned to Pueblo, Colorado in the mid-1990's when my father's health was failing and rented out my Buena Vista, Colorado, property. I now live at 1125 Milky Way, Thornton,Colorado 80260 telephone 719-320-2769 .
This is about 5 miles from my daughter Jessica Murray and my grandchildren.
I wish you the best 1956 Central High school graduates.
