Marcielle Schmutzler Rockhill

Just after my sophomore year at C.U., my first husband and I married and remained so until January, 1988 when we divorced. During our time together, we had three children: Dana (1962), Scott (1967), and Kristin (1971).
His job changes took our family from Boulder to Chicago and Oak Forest, Illinois, to Colorado Springs and finally to West Des Moines, Iowa.
Before leaving Boulder, I obtained my B.A. (1963) and M.A. (1964) in English from C.U. After that I taught school for one year in Denver and two years in Boulder.
After arriving in Chicago, I completed all course work on a PhD. in English at the University of Chicago but didn't have the opportunity to write the dissertation before it was time to move again.
Life in Iowa brought me to employment with the state. First I worked for what's now called the Department of Employment Services, where I made decisions concerning Unemployment Insurance claims and later investigated U.I. fraud. When Iowa first passed a Minimum Wage law, I was hired by the Division of Labor to manage the section that enforces this law. I requested and was granted the opportunity for this section to also expand its duties to enforce laws covering Wage Payment Collection, Child Labor, Private Employment Agency Licensing, and Iowa's Open Records. I took early retirement in January, 2002.
My present husband and I have been married since 1990 and have been enjoying wonderful travels together. We have gone across the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, to Canada, Australia and New Zealand with stops on Fiji and Tahiti, China and Tibet, Russia, Finland, Estonia, Turkey, St. Thomas, St.John, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Spain, Morocco, Portugal, Malta, Sardinia, Corsica, Israel and Egypt. I've also been to Greece and England. We also have had fun traveling in the states, often attending music festivals (jazz and ragtime).
When Rocky was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2006, our travels slowed down, but we still managed to go to the Czech Republic and take a Danube River cruise from Austria to Slovakia and Hungary. As Rocky has been in partial remission for the past four months, we have spent much less time on doctor/hospital visits and more on family ones (siblings, children, grandchildren, nephews, and nieces).
During a normal week I go to the Y Monday through Friday where I do kick boxing, tai chi, yoga, body jam, water aerobics, step aerobics, and a "get moving" class.
