Today's Featured Biography
Elin Griffith Kambuga
February 2, 2016
Another update since it has been a while...we have moved back to Illinois to Evanston just north of Chicago. The cold windy city has given us lots of great opportunities. I am working in a small office, and studying for my PhD online in Health Education and Promotion.
Dominick works in a neighboring school district for a K-8 school maintaining the grounds while going to school studying computer science.
Jamila is now 9 in fourth grade, plays viola, swims, builds lego cities and minecraft worlds, an avid writer and investigator, loves animals, and has a strong sense of justice for the homeless and anyone who needs help.
2008
Hmmm...I will try to make a long story short or at least put it into a nutshell. After graduation (1989-1990) I went to Guyana, South America and lived there for a year working with the Baha'i community. When I returned to the states I went to Albuquerque, NM to start school at UNM and spend time with my biological father's family. So from 1990-1997 I worked fulltime and went to school parttime. I remember running into Ty Jones one of those years while in Albuquerque- I think he was playing baseball for the college if I remember correctly. My best job was working at a Children's Psychiatric Hospital and later doing research for the Department of Public Health at the School of Medicine. For 3 months in 1997 I traveled around the world and then in September transferred to Evergreen State College in Washington and finished my Bachelor's in Liberal Arts concentrating in Health Education and Development in 1999. In 1998 during the summer, I lived in Botswana, Africa for 3 months and again in 2000 another 3 months. From 2000-2003 I lived in Israel doing religious volunteer work at the Baha'i World Centre in Haifa where I met my husband. We did not get married till 2004 though since we decided to come back to the states to finish our respective schooling needs. And the easiest way to get him in the country was to bring him over on a fiance visa-Dominic is from Tanzania in East Africa. In 2003, I moved to Chicago where I had a job at the Baha'i National Center working in the finance department and waited for a year to get married. In March 2004, we got married in Cedaredge at the Appleshed. We lived in Chicago till August 2006 and moved to Pensacola, Florida where we now reside. Our daughter Jamila was born in the Chicago area in July 2006, she just turned one last month. At this point, I am a stay at home mom, wanna be writer who may be a graduate student soon. Jamila keeps me very busy but happy. Take a look at my blog sometime if you get a chance. I look forward to seeing everyone next year.
