The summer road trip was a lot of fun...alot of work...and a memory that will last forever. We went through 17 states, spent 3 weeks in GA, and were on the road for almost a month. We camped, stayed in hotels, motels, and with any relatives we could find along the way. We scoured Jim's hometown of Coweta, Oklahoma and found blood relatives of my children in a little out of the way church 5 miles out of town toward Tulsa. Finding the church was a miracle to say the least. We were on a crazy hunt..directed by a distant memory recollected in a thick southern accent! "Turn back that-a-way, and go down the dirt road, under the overpass that heads toward Broken Arrow...when you've gone about five miles out of town stayin on the dirt road, there'll be two houses on the right of the road. There's a little church set back behind the houses. Go down that dirt road next to the houses, and back behind the willow trees.....ask for the Preacher, Brother Brewer..." It was two days of going around a small country town, asking if anyone knew any Busby's, or recognized Jim's high school picture. We finally found a lead at the Green Parrot Cafe. Now my kids have some family roots on their father's side. We met their Uncle Virgil, Aunt Melba, and Uncle Donny. Those are names from another era, and I must say that is what Coweta Oklahoma was...another time...a simpler time. We had 6 bowls of ice-cream and cherry cokes at The Green Parrot Cafe for less than $5.00. Lila shooed us out at 2:00 pm and locked up. She said she locks up at 2:00 cuz it's too hot to cook, and too hot to stay open in the heat of the afternoon. There was no air conditioning. The screen door of the restaurant banged behind us when we left. The Green Parrot sign blinked once more and turned off. The "closed" sign appeared on the other side of the front door glass. Lila pulled down the roller shades in the windows and locked up. As she closed up, it symbolized a closure on an era that is part of a past we are all a part of.
All my kids are adjusting to school and have settled into living in Spokane. This is the coolest city. Very different from any other metropolitan area I've been in. Compact and easy to maneuver through - the city apopears to be about 10 miles from end to end. Progressive, yet uncrowded. The people are friendly and unjaded. Hmm....wonder how long that can last??
It's cold every day. I'm not used to snow outside all the time. You don't use your parking brake for fear it will freeze up!
Winter scarves and mufflers, gloves trimmed in fur, shoes with rubber soles...to avoid slipping on the ice. It's different from temperate and rainy Seattle. Seattle is very similar to SF. Spokane is dry cold, icy streets, 0 degree weather, and powder snow.
It's a welcome climate change that I'm learning to enjoy.
Wishing you all Health, Prosperity, Happiness and Blessings this Holiday Season.
Best Regards to all! June
SEPTEMBER 2008
Time does march on doesn't it! I will be 51 this upcoming September 30th! Feeling good is such a positive, and a blessing at this age. My job exposes to me to many people of whom most are half my age. It blows me away that so many feel old at 30... Many of them have lived harsh lives, been in jail, and had to start over many times. Their outlook prompts me to be grateful for what I have in life!
All said and done, it's been a good year for me. I am self employed in a fun and interesting business that involves driving and meeting people all day. I love having a job where I actually look forward to going to work. The hours are crazy....up at 3:30 am and work's done at 1:00 pm. The day passes very rapidly.
My oldest son is now 23. He moved back home to attend Culinary School. My second son is in his second year in the Army, doing well and expecting depolyment to Iraq. (Obviously, I hope he never goes...but support his decision and feel the Army has made a "Man" of him.) My oldest daughter is now 17. Smart, gorgeous, and has chosen to not have a boyfriend or date much. She is a HS Junior, taking driver's ed., working, etc. My 15 year old son has just started 10th grade. He is currently living at a friends and has chosen to "do whatever he wants." Reading between the lines should give an idea to anyone that he is rebelling and thinks he "has it all going on". Sometimes I wish life was as simple as he thinks it is! My 13 year old son has just entered 7th grade. Independent, outspoken, opinionated, and a budding Entrepreneur; he is a great kid becoming a great man...but what a rocky road along the way...;-). My youngest ( a daughter) has just turned 12. Next to the boys, she has been comparatively easy to raise. Model student, model child, a wonderful friend, very kind and compassionate, she is generally very considerate as to how her decisions and behavior affect others. Her older siblings have always been protective of her and it's interesting to observe how she is so cognizant of others as a result.
Anyone who ever knew me "back in the day" will remember, "I was never going to have kids" (since I was the oldest of five and at 17 - was sick of babysitting). I was also never going to have a house and yard, never going to cook, and never going to get married. All my "nevers" became my future. Life sure turned out different for me than I had planned, and it's been interesting to look back and reflect that much of what I ran from at 17, became my reality. Much of it seemed to occur naturally as a concientious choice. My mother and I often reflect upon this. Is it destiny? LOL.
And of course I have often apologized to Mom for how much grief I gave her through my teen years, and thanked both my mom and dad for persevering as parents.
I am still single. I date a great guy once in a while who has a similar interest in Classic cars. I have a pink and white 57 Chevy. Just a 4 door "old lady car", but she's Stock and Classic. I have one car, he is a true collector...restoring and keeping over twenty.
Spokane has turned out to be a good city in which to raise my kids. I lucked out house buying in the neighbor hood I live in. Life is relatively affordable here. There is an abundance of recreational opportunities for anyone within a 2 hour drive. 180 lakes. Hunting, Fishing, Camping, Swimming, Skiing, Shopping, Gambling, etc.
Well, it's Saturday morning and I need to get to work fixing a door before the weather turns. God bless all of you, and I hope you have had a great year! Hard to believe we are mostly over 50 now (I sure don't feel old except when I'm arguing with my kids!)
If you made it this far, thank you for listening to me ramble and reminisce. Please excuse mis-spellings. I hope it's been a good year for all of you, and you're looking as forward to this new decade of our fifties as I am!
WISHING EVERY ONE OF YOU THE BEST IN LIFE AS WE MOVE FORWARD TO 2009.....
