Today's Featured Biography
Arnold Prades
Gosh what a blast from the past!! Anyone feeling nostalgic yet?
First off hello to my friends and classmates of 1983 that's still alive and kicking and my condolences to the families and friends of our classmates who have decided to go on a greater journey that awaits us all...
Great job December and co for keeping this site going, I dont know how you all do it with family and work commitments. You all really need to get a life... ;-)
As soon as the Australian dollars pick up against the US dollars I'll definately be donating to this website. Do you take Australian checks? ;-)
You are all probably interested (and if not..well you can always stop reading.. )what I've been doing since we parted ways on on that fateful day in 1983...well one thing I did NOT do was keep in touch with any of you...I guess it was my way of burying my memories of highschool...but like all things..we come full circles..and here I am.
After I left MMHS, I spent some aimless time at UCSD, trying to figure out what I really wanted to do in life, after 2 yrs I found college was not really for me and I thought I would get out of San Diego and see the world. I thought, what better way to do that then with Uncle Sam. Uncle Sam offered 3 tour packages. I could either cruise the Mediterranean with the Navy, back pack it through Eastern Europe with the Army, or thread the jungles of South America with the Marines. I thought a cruise with the Navy didnt sound all that bad...what sold me was when the Navy recruiter told me they had McDonalds on the carriers...gosh I was so naive...
The Navy recruiter, after seeing the results of my ASVAB test, decided that I would be prime canditate for the Nuclear Power Program...little did I know what was in store for me. Needless to say I managed to make it through the program alive and sane as a Reactor Operator. After NPTU training in Idaho in 1988, I bummed around on several submarines in the east coast and eventually ended up on the USS San Francisco in Hawaii and while there met my future aussie wife.
In 1998 after 5 years in Hawaii, my wife tired of the laid back life style, walks on the beach, temperate climate, and uptight mainlanders, decided she wanted to go home to her beloved Australia, vegemite, and aussie rules football.
Like all guys who've been struck with the cupid arrow, I oblige without any questions and thought "you beaut", never lived in Australia before..it can't be any be worse than San Diego ;-)
Eleven years on I am still in Australia, plant roots slowly growing on my feet, a family man with a beautiful wife and child and working as an IT manager for a Transport and Logistics company in Melbourne and harking back to the simple days when there was no computers and the only viruses we knew were called Herpes, VD, Gonorrhea, etc...;-)
So if you are ever in Melbourne, feel free to reach out and we can reminesce together over fish and chips with a nice cold Victoria Bitter at the local pub.
