Today's Featured Biography
Carl Borden
After graduating from PHS, I attended UC Santa Barbara for 4 years, earning a B.A. in Environmental Studies in June 1975. While at UCSB, I started playing electric bass guitar, which remains my main hobby.
After UCSB, I stayed in Isla Vista for what could be called a "lost year" of not doing much and trying to decide on a career to pursue. At the suggestion of my brother Barry (PHS Class of '69) I took the LSAT. I did well enough to be admitted to Golden Gate U. School of Law in SF, which awarded me a J.D. after the usual 3 years of instruction.
During that time Hank Moreria and I were co-tenants in a house my parents owned on James Ave. in Oakland's Rockridge neighborhood. We had many good parties and played some good music there. Frolic and Detour was one of our bands.
In my first year of law school, I was hired by California Farm Bureau Federation as a part-time law clerk. That's when Farm Bureau, a non-governmental agricultural trade association, was headquartered on Telegraph Ave. near Ashby in Berkeley.
While the Farm Bureau was preparing to move to Sacramento in 1979, its Legal Services Division, on the assumption I would pass the bar exam, prospectively created a position for me as an attorney. While waiting for the exam's results, I took the plunge and bought a home in Sacramento so I could relocate there along with the Farm Bureau. Fortunately I passed on my first try. I've been with Farm Bureau ever since, as an associate counsel for many years.
I met my wonderful wife Linda in 1982, and we married the next year. She devoted herself to raising our son, David. He graduated in May 2010 from UC Irvine with a B.A. in dramatic arts.
After returning home to build up some cash reserves, David moved to Manhattan in Jan. 2011. He works for West Elm Furniture. Linda and I are thus once again empty nesters, except for our two Basenji dogs, Lulu and Toby.
My current band is Jax Hammer. I also enjoy spending time in our backyard, which I've been trying to make as tropical-looking as possible despite Sacramento's winter temperatures, which are often unfriendly to tropical plants.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
