Today's Featured Biography
Hugh Gray
We now live in Portland, Oregon and have since 1989. We own and operate two small retail produce and grocery stores in north portland. They are both in underserved areas of the city. Store no. 1 has been going for 10 years and we just opened no. 2 store last Nov. In 2004 we won an award from the City of Portland, Office of Sutainability, a BEST Award for best sustainable Food System, it was for sustainable practices and for supplying affordable and culturally appropriate food to an underserved segment of our population.
I started working produce the day after graduation from Jordan, working for McCoy's Markets all over LA. I then moved to Bandon Oregon on the south coast and worked for Ray's Food Place as a manager and transfered to Smith River, Calif. where I was fired. Not wanting to go south again, we picked up and moved to Portland.
I have been divorced once. I have currently been married for 25 years. We have raised six children together along with many guardianships and we are certified foster parents. We are so done with all of that now though. Our youngest is in college at the College of the Siskiyous in Weed, Calif. He will be home soon to start here at Portland State. We have 6 grandchildren and all live close by.
Cindy and I have had a great life full of joy and struggle. Being a small business operator is always a struggle, but I really love my work. Cindy is my strength and my backbone. We met when I was working in Bandon, Ore. She was born and raised in Port Orford Oregon. Who ever thought that I would find my soul mate in a small town on the Oregon Coast?
Most of you know that my brother Dick passed in 1975. He had an anurism. He now has two beautiful grown daughters, one works in Hollywood for shows like Overhaulin. The other lives in Bishop, California , is married and has twin daughters. The rest of my siblings are doing great and all have moved out of the LA area, Oklahoma, Utah and Northern Calif.
