Joan Murawski Lavey

Has it really been 50 years since we walked our separate ways in different directions after graduation? On October 4th we will have the opportunity to interact again. Some of our paths have crossed over the years and others will do so at Embassy Suites for the first time since 1964. I am looking forward to seeing all of you as we share our stories and paths.

After leaving Bishop Amat, I attended Mt. St. Mary's College in Brentwood from 1964-1965. Though I loved the school academically I felt that I needed a different setting. I transferred to Cal State L.A. In September of 1965, I received my Bachelor's Degree in History in 1968 and my Secondary Teaching Credential in Dec. of 1969.

In October of 1970 I was hired by the Hacienda-La Puente Unified School District. I taught for two years at La Puente High School. In 1972 I moved to Workman High School in City of Industry and taught there for the next 35 years. I taught U.S. History, Political Science, and Economics to 11th and 12th grade students. The last five years of my career I also taught a U.S. History survey class in the evening at Citrus Community College.

I truly enjoyed my teaching career on all levels. I loved the challenge of transmitting my love of history to my students. Being mentor and friend to students as they decided on their future paths was also rewarding.

During my career I served on many district curriculum committees, principal selection committees, textbook adoption committees etc. I was involved in the Leadership Team at Workman High School for many years. In addition I was the Faculty Club Coordinator for meetings and events. I also served as Department Chair of Social Science for four years.

In 1991 I received a Keck Fellowship at Pepperdine University in Malibu to pursue a Master’s Degree in American Studies. I spent Monday nights and several weeks in two consecutive summers overlooking the blue pacific with 19 other colleagues. It was a wonderful experience and one that would open other doors for me.

In the summer of 2000 I was selected to participate in a National Endowment for the Humanities Seminar. It was a comparison of slavery in the 17th &18th century in the Chesapeake and the Low Country. We spent three weeks at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. and two weeks at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. It was a marvelous experience since our instructors were 6 of the top ten historians in the U.S. on slavery.

In 2003 I spent a week at the Hermitage outside of Nashville Tennessee. This site was part of the Landmarks in American History Program sponsored by the N.E,H. I On the last day of the program I was asked to be the teacher spokesperson for the concluding event. I shared the platform with Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, The President of Middle Tennessee State University, and a representative of the N.E.H.

In 2005 and 2007 I was invited by the National Endowment for the Humanities to serve on a panel in Washington D.C. for the purpose of evaluating historical sites to be used for the Landmarks in American History the following summers. I served as the K-12 representative on both panels. Lots of work but a marvelous experience!

Another memorable experience of my teaching career was hearing Maya Angelou speak at a National High School Conference in Portland. The speech was a work of art intertwining poetry, gospel stanzas and oratory. The topic was how you never know how much you have influenced others. It was the most amazing speech and I will never forget it.

On a personal level I married Tom Lavey (B.A. class of 61) in 1967. We lived in Alhambra for four years and then bought a house in Hacienda Heights in 1971. We had two children Sean(1968) and Kelly(1973). We now have three grandchildren Brittany (19), Alyssa (12) and Chelsea (9). Our son and his family live in Westminster Colorado where we will go to visit later this month. Our daughter lives nearby in Southern California. In November we will celebrate our 47th anniversary.

I love to travel! It is one of my favorite things to do. This year I did more than usual. In April I spent a week in Paris and a week in Burgundy. In June I spent a week in Hilton Head Island South Carolina. In July I traveled to Poland with a teacher friend. All four of my grandparents were born there and it was one of my ambitions to go there. It was a beautiful country from the Baltic to the Tatra Mts. It has accomplished much since independence - very modern and progressive. In August my husband Tom and I went on a cruise to Alaska followed by the land excursion to Talkeetna, Denali Park, and Fairbanks. In 2014 my theme was "travel poor and loving it."

Tuesday is always golf day and will find me on a local course playing with four other ladies, all retired colleagues. I still enjoy the beach and take advantage of my brother's place in Palm Desert but miss those skiing days in Mammoth.

What have I learned in 50 years? 1) Love, family, and friends are the glue that keep life together; 2) Love what you do and work hard at it; 3) Celebrate life and enjoy the beauty of the world; 4) Never second guess God; 5) Be flexible!

Love and blessings to all as we continue our stories into the next decades. Yes I am an optimist.
