Today's Featured Biography
Mary Hobbs Smith
After graduating from high school I attended Cal State L.A., while continuing to work part time as a grocery checker for Von's, and then Ralph's, a job I had started after my junior year at Amat. At Ralph's I met a charming guy just out of the military. We were married in January, 1966, and started a family right away, so my college days were basically over.
Ed started a career in banking in 1967 and we moved out of southern CA in 1972. We had two daughters by then, with a third born in 1973. We moved around CA with several transfers in the bank, raising our daughters and enjoying family life. For the most part I got to be a corporate wife, but I did venture out and took a few college courses in accounting. Eventually I became an enrolled agent, doing tax work in many of the cities where we lived. It was always a part-time enterprise, as being the "Mom" has been the focus and best part of my life, and being "Grandma" to seven grandkids my greatest reward.
Ed totally retired from banking in 2005. We had semi-retired in 1999 to Avila Beach CA. As much as we loved the area , I was missing our five youngest grandkids who all lived in Texas. So we made another big move and have been enjoying our retirement there since 2009. We live on a lake and a golf course and enjoy both boating and golfing. We both love to travel, by motor home and on the big cruise ships, and have been fortunate to see much of the US. We have also taken several trips abroad.
Our girls are doing well (all with college degrees, yeah), and raising their own families. We are proud of all of them. One of them is my boss, as I still do tax work for her during the busy tax season.
Soon we will be celebrating our 49th anniversary, and it is still a great life for us. We are so thankful, for every step and blessing along the way. One of those steps was my time at Bishop Amat. I am looking forward to some great reminiscing after "50" years...wow!

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
