Today's Featured Biography
Pauline Kayser Hober
I started at Newton College of the Sacred Heart in Newton, Massachusetts after Amat graduation. My family moved back to Hinsdale, Illinois the summer after freshman year (1965). After I graduated from Newton with a European History degree (very marketable - ha!), I moved to Washington, DC because three of my Newton friends needed a fourth roommate for their apartment. (Never imagining I would stay in the area for good.) My first job was as a sales clerk in a dress shop for $1.25 an hour. After three months, I quit because I wanted to go home for a Christmas vacation (still in college mode). When I returned, I visited my Congressman's office and asked if they were hiring and was shocked and pleased when they did hire me a few days later. I worked on the Hill for three and a half years and then left to attend the AMI (Associatione Montessori Internationale) training program.
I graduated in May 1973 and taught for four years as a Primary teacher (children three to six years old in a mixed age classroom) during which I married Steve, moved to a nearby Maryland suburb and had my first son, Brian. I finished the school year and then retired, had Katie in 1978 and was hired by the Montessori school they were attending in 1982. I worked at that school (Paint Branch Montessori) off and on until 1998. All three of my children attended through sixth grade before switching to our local public schools.
After two years at another Montessori school, I started working for my current employer, Crossway Community, a one-of-a-kind nonprofit.
We are located in Kensington, Maryland in a renovate former elementary school. We have thirty-six apartments for single mothers and their children. Over time, the organization decided to focus on mothers with young children (under four years of age). All the research today supports what Dr. Montessori observed in the early 20th Century -- that young children have an absorbent mind -- and from that point on (about 16 years ago), we have only accepted mothers with at least one child younger than four years old into our three year, Life Skills Program. It is a big commitment on the part of the women chosen, because we do extensive work with them on economic literacy (budgeting and finance), career and education goals, health and safety, and family living (parenting skills, home management, etc.). Crossway started a Montessori school for children 3 months to six years old about 1998. I have taught there for the past 14 years (retired from the classroom in June)and will continue on doing administrative things like curriculum development, home visits with the mothers, etc. The school includes families from the wider community which gives the children a real cross-section of ethnicities and social and economic backgrounds. It has been a very rewarding opportunity to work for Crossway.
My seven grandchildren all live out West. Brian has three children (Damien, 4; Charlotte, 3; and Hailey, 1) and recently settled in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho (such a beautiful place!). Katie is in San Jose, CA
with her family: Alexander, 13; Amy, 11;
Ava, 8; Aristotle, 5. Needless to say, this is a bummer for us as grandparents. When we are ready, I imagine we, too, will move
West. Our youngest, Mike, still lives in Maryland.
Like all of you, I can't believe it's been 50 years since graduation. Unlike most of you who grew up and stayed in CA, my time in CA was short, but I remember it as a wonderful time (if we forget the agony of adolescence).
We had such a great class and really felt the special place we had being one of the "founding" classes.
