Today's Featured Biography
Kathryn Pittman Edstrom
After High School graduation, I worked part-time at a Floral Design Company and continued as I started Pasadena City College majoring in Advertising Design. In June 1966 I graduated with an AA and then spent the summer as the Crafts Counselor for the Lake Elsinore Camp Fire Girls Camp. In September, I started work as a Paste-up Artist at an upstart Company that was getting into the Computer Typesetting Field. As the company grew and changed I developed new skills and progressed to Production Manager in the Department that managed dictionaries & encyclopedias. We also managed a number of other print products such as legal volumes and pharmaceutical reference books. I did some traveling as well as selling and enjoyed trips to Boston, New York and San Francisco over the years to meet with customers. On off days during the travels, I managed to visit Washington DC, Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, the Smithsonian and other interesting locations. I bought my home in December 1974 and we have lived there ever since. As technology changed and management shifted the company mission, I found myself laid off after 36 years in December 2001. My now husband, who had worked with me for 26 years, also was laid off. We found new jobs, not easy at our age, but my love of Disney landed me a job at the Disney Store in Arcadia and Bill found a position with the newly formed Homeland Security TSA at Burbank Airport. We sold his home and in 2005 we got married. I continued to work until 2012 when I retired and Bill retired a few years before but started a new career as a Crossing Guard with the Alhambra Police at a nearby elementary school.
In my “spare” time I found many opportunities for service through Beta Sigma Phi, an International Women’s Friendship Sorority. I have belonged for over 45 years and been honored and included in the Outstanding Young Women of America 1970 volume, as well as Woman of the year and in 2005 the highest honor, the International Award of Distinction. I served 5 times on the Southern California Board, as well as the San Gabriel Valley Council Board a number of times. Recently, I produced [as a volunteer] the Centennial Book for All Souls Church, 185 pages including doing much of the photography of parish groups and activities.
A fun 2nd job started by volunteering for the 1984 Olympics at the Rose Bowl. I was also picked to work both the Men's & Women's marathons at Santa Monica College as well as the Closing Ceremonies at the Coliseum! The security clearance enabled me to work for the Pope's visit at Dodger Stadium then the 1994 World Cup at the Rose Bowl. UCLA Football hired about 20 of us and I worked my way up to Section Chief at the Rose Bowl but retired recently after 25 years with them. I also "temp'd" for Security at Rose Bowl concerts---Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones and others plus those fun monster truck events.
My “real fun” starts with entertaining and now as the Family “Matriarch” we host all the family gatherings, I love to decorate for every holiday and of course, am big with crafts of all sorts. I’ve been entering the Los Angeles County Fair every year since 1963 and have garnered over 250 ribbons over the years. Of course you can’t say fun without Disneyland trips and we have been able to go to Walt Disney World 3 times [once for our belated honeymoon!]
I am happy to be “helping” with our 50th reunion – I remember doing centerpieces for the 10th! Even though Eloise twisted my arm – so far, it’s been a fun time trying to remember. . . Looking forward to seeing everyone again!

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
