Today's Featured Biography
Glen Rosecrans Rose
Glen likes to say he escaped from L.A. in the mid 1970's during the great hippie migration north. He left with his dog and his VW van and settled in Santa Cruz, California. He has called Santa Cruz his home ever since even though he spends more than half the year away on the road for work or play. He is currently a writer of music books but principally made his living as a pianist for over 45 years. The proverbial starving artist chasing his dreams around the world. He has always loved playing jazz but to make a living played all styles of piano and guitar professionally. His music career began when he graduated from high school and worked along side his father as a music copyist in the 20th Century Fox music library preparing music for the studio recording sessions. This work put him in contact with the likes of John Williams, Lalo Schriffrin, Quincy Jones, Sammy Nestico, Billy May and many other film composers of that era. He says this work was a great training ground and orientation for his life in professional music.
In the 1970s, Glen Rose taught music notation at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz for a few years and was a music director for local theater productions in the community. "Nothing high brow, just a lot of fun", he says.
In the 1980’s, he was writing and producing jingles for radio and TV. He composed over 100 on-air jingles in the central California area. As he likes to say, "I wrote in the pre-digital era, when music was still written by hand."
He had a short lived stint as a cruise ship pianist that was curtailed after one month by his discovery that he was prone to sea sickness.
For eight years, he toured as a pianist/ singer/ entertainer, playing piano bars throughout Western Europe. One month contracts end-to-end in a new city every month. He was officially a resident of Sweden for a while but never really made it through a whole winter there. He would always flee to the islands of Thailand and return in Spring.
The real fulfillment of his professional entertainer pursuits began in the 1990’s when he toured the U.S. for seventeen years with his piano stage show. He would build a new show every year featuring the music of one of the Great American Songbook Composers. His hobby and passion was studying the lives and music of Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, etc. and presenting a new stage show every year. "Small time stuff but big fun and very satisfying", he says.
He currently writes a series of beginning jazz studies books and videos for piano, guitar and ukulele and is sometimes found on the road in Asia and the states giving lectures and workshops on jazz and improvisation for piano or ukulele.
His first book, a textbook called, "A Music Notation Primer" was endorsed by film composer John Williams was widely used in colleges before computer software superseded that study.
Glen lives half his life in SE Asia and is still very much active in music. Find out more about him at his business websites jazzypiano.net and jazzyukulele.com.
