Today's Featured Biography
William Hyder
Updated June 2009.
I married in Santa Barbara and have two wonderful children, Nathan and Alisha, from that marriage. I divorced after moving to Santa Cruz. I married my lovely wife Debbie and added a second daughter, Dove Noel, to my family. Nathan is a fireman in Coeur d'Alene, Alisha and Dove are still in the Santa Cruz area. No grandchildren as yet.
I moved to Santa Cruz to become the computing director in the UC Santa Cruz Division of Social Sciences. I moved from that position to assistant dean of Social Sciences and from there to assistant chancellor. I'm currently Director of Client Relationship Management in Information Technology Services. How is that for a title?
Outside of work, I'm a archaeological specialist in prehistoric art and have conducted projects for the National Park Service, California State Parks, and the Air Force. I've worked in California, the Southwest, and Easter Island. The Basketmaker cultures of Grand Gulch and Cedar Mesa in southeastern Utah have been my primary area of focus in the Southwest. I have mostly retired from consulting and look forward to retiring from my day job as well in a couple of years. I have lots of other things I want to do and I'm ready to begin taking them on.
I served four years as president of the American Rock Art Research Association. In addition to much of the American west, I've traveled to Mexico, Australia, France, and South Africa to see and study prehistoric art. I have had the good fortune to be the guest of many interesting archaeologists, hunters, guides, farmers, and other good folk on my travels. I've also had the good fortune to play host to many of them and other scholars and adventurers in the states.
My last visit to Fortuna was to bury my father alongside my mother (actually they share one plot). Its been a sometimes strange but always wonderful 40 years. Unexpected quintuple bypass surgery on July 30 means I missed the reunion in 2008.
2009 brings prostrate cancer and massive budget cuts in the university. Health has convinced me to do my bit and retire at the end of 2010. With all the bad news, it has actually brought about a degree of peace looking forward to retirement and working with several staff to pass the leadership baton. I take great pride in their success. Perhaps because of my health, I've been honored with a leadership award and recognition of my contributions at work and a lifetime service award from the rock art association. All in all, not a bad year allowing for the fact that the medical treatments have left me feeling better than I have in four or five years. I look forward to seeing everyone in 2013 and 2018.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
