Today's Featured Biography
Larry Frederick
As I remember El Cerrito HS, I remember all the fun times with my close friends and all those crazy ECHS Gauchos fans.
After graduating from El Cerrito I joined the USMC and spent my two years in Vietnam and in Okinawa learning how to survive in scary situations that just seem like a fuzzy memory now.
In 1969, I came back home and attended Contra Costa College for two years and there I met many of the 1970 ECHS graduates and I graduated in 1971.
In 1971, I married another ECHS graduate, Gail Schneider, and we have now been married 31 years and are proud parents of 6 children.
In 1971, I was hired by the Oakland Police Dept. and worked there until 1982 when I was struck by a speeding vehicle at 65 mph while on duty, after which I retired. (My life was saved by 110 anonymous donors who gave one unit of blood each)
From 1983 on, I spent many years at home recovering from the accident, being a "Mr. Dad" raising my children, going back to school at Sonoma State University and graduating from SSU in 1988 with a BA in Management and Marketing.
In the early 1990's I became involved in my true passion of life, volunteering as a blood advocate, for America's Blood Centers and the Red Cross.
I was involved in several state-wide and nation-wide blood drives in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, and 1997. There were several awards which came my way including a trip to the White House in the Oval office to meet with President Clinton.
These volunteer efforts and speaking engagements throughout the U.S. earned me a totally unexpected "Distinguished Alumnus Award" in 1998 from SSU (my alma mater) and the America's Blood Centers, "President's Award."
I also was honored to have America's Blood Centers set up a perpetual "Larry J. Frederick" award to be given out every two years to a deserving candidate for their contributions to the Blood Centers throughout the U.S.
I am now teaching computer classes at a post-secondary vocational school in Santa Rosa, helping injured and displaced workers transition into a new career. Isn't it amazing how the "healing circle" comes around to touch and help all of us when we least expect it.
I would like to say "thank you" to all my friends and instructors at ECHS for the wonderful memories you provided to me while I was attending El Cerrito High School.
