Today's Featured Biography

David Long

I worked at Disneyland after graduting from Esperanza in 1984, No, I wasn't Mickey Mouse; I served cheeseburgers while wearing an orange polyester jumpsuit. Good times.
I left OC for good in 1990, when I went to San Francisco State University to finish my BA degree in policial science - it was a more welcoming place than OC for a liberal Democrat like me! Those few of you who may remember me from Esperanza (the Sceglio twins) might recall I loved politics even in high school.
While in college, I got a taste of the political world during an internship in the Washington, DC office of U.S. Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA). If you ever hear stories about interns walking the Senator's dog, they're all true. Ted Kennedy's dog Blarney and I became the best of friends that semester.
After graduation, I returned to Capitol Hill to work on criminal justice issues on the legislative staffs of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee and U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA).
I later turned 30, quit my job with Feinstein, bought a one-way ticket to Europe and traveled there until the money ran out. I had the time of my life hiking the Alps, exploring museums and bars, running with the bulls and lounging on Spanish beaches -- and then returned to DC to no job and no place to live!
I later worked in Democratic politics and for the Kennedy family. This coincided with the Clinton years, so I followed Bill's example and made the most of my time in the nation's capital.
In 2000, I moved to Boston, where I worked as a writer and Web guy for Monster.com. There I met my wife, Alicia Mills. We were married in May 2003 and now live with our dog Buddha in Asheville, North Carolina, a laid-back, eclectic city nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. She's an elementary school music teacher (she's a trained opera singer) and I do Web work for the Asheville Chamber of Commerce.
I can't believe it's been 20 years since Esperanza. Time flies when you're having fun.
