Today's Featured Biography
Dana Somerville Schwartz
After getting married in 1991, my husband and I moved to Indiana and then to Ohio as he worked his way up the corporate ladder with Chromium Industries and and Industrial Engineer-Marketing Major. I had my first child, Peter Johann Schwartz in January of 92 and was thrilled to be a Mommy. His sister Hailey followed and was born on Mother's Day in May of 94. I was a stay home Mommy for the first years of their lives and spent time home schooling, gardening and swimming in the pool. Life was good. After the kids started Kindergarten, and my husbands company was having difficulties, I decided to get a teaching job. (I had worked on getting my certificate to teach while doing the stay-at-home-Mom thing. I majored in Spanish so getting the teaching degree seemed like a nice match. I started teaching Spanish at Liberty High School in Liberty, Ohio. It was a blast and Ioved it.
Being away from my family in Flag was really hard for me, I wanted my kids to grow up around my family and experience the love I had always cherished. My husband agreed it was time for a change and so we moved back to Flagstaff in 2000. I taught Spanish and Art Appreciation at Nortern Prep Academy for my first year until Bev Hurley (now Superintendent of Schools in Buckeye), hired me at our very own Flagstaff High School. It was so weird to teach with teacher I had when I was there as a student, Mr. Brown, Coaches Holland, Baca, Haglin and Carlin. I think it was weird at first for them too but after a while it was all good. I taught there for 2 years before getting an offer for a district level position in Phoenix as the Language Acquisition Specialist in the Pendergast School District. We moved yet again and I found myself on a fast track to leadership. I completed my Masters in Bilingual Multicultural Ed. and then completed my second masters in Educational Leadership. After serving as an intern for the Principal at Westwind Primary School, I was offered the position of Assistant Principal. After only a few weeks at AP, I was offered the Principalship. This is my second year as the Principal of Westwind Primary, home of the mighty Wildcats!
We currently live in Desert Harbor in Peoria and my kids LOVE their school and friends. They are both active in sports, Peter play basketball, football and wrestles. He quarterbacked for the Sandsharks this past year and had an impressive season. Hailey is my tenacious little volleyball players. She gave up softball to play year-round club volleyball which is a competitive and demanding outfit. We do lots of traveling to tournaments around the Southwest and live out of our Tahoe like perpetual tailgaters. It's fun and she love to compete. She played in the age 14-1s division as a 12 year-old making her the little peanut of the team but she held her own and earned the respect of the coaches and older girls.
Sadly, in the last year my husband and I divorced but have done so amicably and the kids have weathered it pretty well. My job and the kids keep me very busy so there wasn't much time for wallowing. I am enjoying the single life again but it is very different at 37 than it was at 17! I still have Aimee, Brad, Gayle and Craig in my life as supports. I can't WAIT to see my girls! So that's my life in review, nothing too out of the ordinary but it's my life and Iike it! :)

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
