Richard McAdams

About a month after graduating from West Point (AL), I left for the US Military Academy at West Point. I graduated four years later, earning a BS in Economics and a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army Armor Corps. Nine days after graduation, I married the love of my life and my high school sweetheart, Annette Duke McAdams (class of ’84), to whom I’ve been married the last wonderful 26 years. We moved to Ft. Knox, KY in June of ’86 for the Armor Officer Basic Course, and then on to Ft. Stewart, GA in December of ’86, where I would serve as a M-1 Tank Platoon Leader, Tank Company Executive Officer (XO), and Battalion Maintenance Officer (BMO). During our stay in GA (’88), our first beautiful girl, Brittney, was born. Annette had graduated from Wallace with her AA and went back to school in Savannah, GA to finish her BS in Psychology. In August of ’90 (three weeks after Annette graduated and one week after we found out she was pregnant with our second child) I was alerted for deployment with the 24th Infantry Division for Operation Desert Shield, which turned into Desert Storm. Just after the end of the Gulf War, in March of ’91, I returned home just five days ahead of our second daughter, Courtney, who was born in Cullman (because Annette had moved home to have help). I got out of the Army in July of ’91, having served my five year commitment. We were blessed to be able to move back to the North Alabama area, buying a home in Hazel Green, which is just north of Huntsville. This put us fairly close (75-90 minutes) to our families. We’ve lived the last 20 years in Hazel Green, welcoming a son to the family (Trey – ’93) and more recently a son-in-law, Ryan (Brittney’s husband).
Annette and I both grew up big BAMA fans, but that’s been made even more so with our children going there. Brittney graduated in ’10 with a BS in Interior Design, Courtney is a Senior there now, majoring in science and secondary education (planning to teach high school chemistry, science, etc.), and Trey (just graduated high school) just got his acceptance letter this week to BAMA, but will be going to Calhoun for a year first.
In addition to making our family and home function, Annette works part time at a doctor’s office and I’m the President of a small federal contractor who provides IT services to DOD and federal government customers. I’ve also been honored to serve the last 11 years as an elected member of the Madison County Board of Education. My 2nd term ends in November ’12 and I will not seek reelection.
