Today's Featured Biography
William (Bill) Mairs
I retired March 28, 2015 after 46 years service with leadership in child welfare in the County and the San Gabriel Valley. I miss the passion and good works, and the cultures with which I performed and the people I helped. Now I spend my time going to the gym playing racquetball, other exercise, spinning, etc, and we travel to see friends locally and in Germany. We went to Hawaii in December. And of course we spend time with elder relatives in their 90's, our children and grandchildren, and their dogs. And we spend time at our beautiful little paradise in Palm Springs. It's all good.
My two years attending Anchorage High School were unexpectedly rich and paradoxical, coming from a small rural high school in Kansas. The experience of living in Anchorage, Alaska was breath-taking, while at the same time full of the challenges of moving somewhere new at an important time of teen-age life.
Living on Elmendorf was an insular time, but fully brought to life by my high school attendance, and what started out as a little part-time job as photofinisher at the Anchorage Daily News. I became their photographer at 15 years of age, traveled to the oil exploration in Kenai, photographed presidents and Alaska Statehood, and daily life in frontier Anchorage and Anchorage High School.
Following graduation I went to Utah to school. I worked summers for a couple of years at the Army Engineers in Anchorage. I served a Spanish-speaking Mormon mission in the Southwest U.S. The family returned to the Air Force base in Kansas and I attended Washburn University. In 1965 I graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Sociology (Social Work) and minors in Psychology and Spanish.
I lived in Los Angeles in the 60’s, married, had a son, divorced, and went to work as a Social Worker, not in that order. In LA It was the 60’s. I completed a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology. I have lived the social work experience while working for LA County.
In 1989 I married Lorraine LaLonde (a French woman, from Rhode Island), my wife, and we have a blended family of four adult children and nine grandchildren. Lorraine sells Real Estate in Arcadia and the foothill communities of the San Gabriel Valley. I have played racquet ball for many years, participated in radio and cable TV broadcasts of high school football for over 20 years, and I’m president of my Arcadia condominium association and vice-president of our condominium association in the desert. We have a vacation condo in Palm Springs (historic Palm Springs Racquet Club) and spend frequent weekends there.
I like to work, and I have worked since I was about ten years old. I am a leader in child welfare and Family Preservation in Los Angeles. I have worked as a manager, and currently I am involved in partnerships with the community and major foundations, while at the same time I continue to supervise staff. Lorraine and I have taken trips to Hawaii, Europe and taken our parents and family. We look forward to visiting Alaska and renewing acquaintances with classmates, the only ties I have to that early era of my life. I still love Alaska and reflect fondly on my life there.

Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
