Today's Featured Biography
Frances Ruhlen McConnel
I left Anchorage in 1960 with my first husband, Ron McConnel (AHS, 1957) to move to Seattle where I did one quarter at the University of Washington before my daughter Crystal was born. I kept going to night school until she and my second daughter Margo were old enough for preschool, then I got my BA, MA, and Ph.D there in English Lit. Then we all moved to Claremont, Ca where I had a job at Scripps Women College. Ron went to Pitzer College while I taught at Scripps. We broke up 1976 and in 1979 I married my present husband, John Peavoy, whom I had hired to teach at Scripps!! He arrived there in 1977, so it's on the up and up. He is 6 years my younger and believe me, it's better to marry a little brother than a big one! (Both my older brother Ray and my younger brother Russ gaduated from A.H.s. too.) I didn't get tenure at Scripps--not being Ivy League and not being able to speak Italian didn't help. Then I taught at various other colleges and ended up in the Creative Writing Dept. at the University of California in Riverside, where I taught for 18 years before retiring.
Besides teaching and mothering and being a good friend, the other thing I do is write, poetry mostly, and I've published several books. I also co-run the Poetry Reading Series at our local library. I still go to Seattle often, as Crystal and Ray and their families are there. Margo lives 60 miles from us in the desert. I have 1 granddaughter and 3 grandsons, and 1 great-grandson, having passed on the tradition of reproducing early. Kind of a curse when you hit the Grandma and Great Grandma titles. But my grandkids call me Binky, which is what my husband calls me. We also have a much beloved Tabby named Little Lulu.

Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
