Today's Featured Biography
Michael Fornarolo
After high school I aimlessly wandered the halls of John Abbott pursuing a dec in business something-or-other. The other was mainly sleeping. And poutine consumption.
Next it was off to Concordia Accounting Superhero Academy. Incredibly, accounting was not as edgy as it’s portrayed in the movies, and I lost interest in it by the time I graduated. Feeling deceived and betrayed by Hollywood, I now needed to find a new purpose in life…
In a bizarre series of events involving a monkey and some air tools, I ended up back at Concordia in Computer Science. Sadly, the monkey did not survive. His sacrifice will not be forgotten. Nor will his smell (monkeys can be smelly).
After Graduation 2.0, and inventing the internet, I accepted a job at Nortel in Ottawa. Some three years later, after some soul searching and having complained about Canadian weather all our lives, Diane and I decided to give South Florida a try. Lots happened while we were there: we got married; 9/11 happened; Anthrax poisoning a couple doors down from the office – good times. Although we liked Florida and the absence of snow, we found the gun laws much too restrictive and so we moved to Dallas about a year later. My job was moving there anyway so we tagged along.
Dallas was an interesting experience. It’s kind of like living in Montreal only without the culture or anything you could term “civilization” outside the greater Dallas area within a 5 hour drive. Like an island city surrounded by an ocean of dirt - with cattle instead of fish. Life on the island wasn’t all bad – good friends, cost of living was low, lots of good shopping and restaurants, and still no snow. Well snow once, but it made the news. And shut down the city. And people died. Really.
Months after arriving in Texas, the project I was working on was canceled. It was time to move again – this time to “Live Free or Die” in New Hampshire. We have come to learn that if you choose to live in a manner other than free in New Hampshire, they will shoot you. Hence the license plate slogan is not so much a slogan, but a warning.
I continue to work for Nortel just outside Boston, in test automation. We’ve been here 3+ years (a record) and it’s the birthplace of our bouncing baby boy, Justin. Soon he’ll be old enough to legally carry a concealed weapon, just like daddy.
Hope to hear from you soon. Except if I owe you money or something.
