Today's Featured Biography
Bill Blasdel
I graduated from B-CC near the bottom of our class, and spent some time after graduation as a mechanic working on Ferraris and Jaguars. I joined the Navy just ahead of being drafted and served for 3 years as a radioman, mostly aboard ship, mercifully not in Vietnam. It was my life in the Navy that gave me the incentive to go back to school; the work was fine, but I wanted a broader world view than I saw among many members of the crew. I started college in 1969 as a 22 year old freshman, only to discover that most of my classmates had little motivation.
I moved to Philadelphia in 1970 and transferred to Temple University to be with my high school sweetheart Bebe Kaplan (class of 1966) who was working on her PhD. We were married in 1971, and I supported us on the GI Bill and working 20-30 hours after classes, in addition to my part time work as a car mechanic on weekends. It became apparent that my high school performance (or lack thereof) was due at least in part to my undiagnosed dyslexia and attention deficit disorder (ADD). I graduated 1st in my class from Temple in January 1972.
I spent a year as a Public Assistance worker and then began at Temple University School of Law in 1973. I took all of the clinical classes that I could, passed the bar and opened my own practice in Philadelphia in 1976. I became a 3/4 time stay-at-home-dad when my daughter Alexa was born in 1979, followed by the birth of my daughter Diana in 1983. I would have killed for more sleep during those years.
I spent most of my early law practice in general civil litigation fighting the good fight, with military courts martial and residential real estate. My practice lately has been mostly complex civil litigation that I still find enjoyable, which is why I haven't retired.
I got sober in 1993, which allowed me to be a full partner in my marriage. I may have been harder to live with as a sober husband; in any event, Bebe and I parted ways in 2008. I left my synagogue of 28 years and joined a Unitarian Church in 2009, where I met my partner Andrea, who was singing in the choir. It’s wonderful to be wanted, appreciated and accepted for who I am by Andrea and the church congregation.
It fills me with joy that my youngest, Diana, consulted me about her wedding dress, shoes and other assorted arrangements for her wedding last year; I am now the kind of father I wanted to be. I also have 2 step daughters whom I love and who love me, and 5 1/2 grandchildren among the 4 daughters (the incipient one is due on Valentine’s Day 2016). Today I tell stories to all the grandkids, sing to Andrea, and live life as a daily adventure to be enjoyed.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
