Today's Featured Biography
Raul Davila
I rememember vividly... the short one
and only meeting I had with the Counselor.
"You are graduating next week", me "No I am NOT ". "Yes You Are". "The Army Needs You." I was 17.... still half crazy.
I decided to try my luck at college
entrance exams... got into St Mary's
Math / Physics Major.
My life took a more serious turn..
Had to get a Job and earn a living
to pay for school , books etc.
I did what seems the impossible today.
I graduated from St. Mary's with a
Math Degree and NO Debt. I paid for
all of my course work and books etc
without borrowing a Dime.
It was not easy. I did it my way.
I worked at various odd jobs.
I was Hired as a Math Teacher for
the East Central ISD the morning
after Graduation from St. Mary's.
After four years at ECISD, I
lost my Religion, believing I could
make a difference in Educating
the youth of the mid 1960's.
I applied and was hired as a
Programmer Trainee at USAA.
I spent the next 10 years writing
soft Ware for various private
sites and employers.
One October, afternoon,in 1975,
I was looking out my 9th floor
office window in downtown SA.
It was about 1 or 2 PM.. and I
saw on the street corners
10 to 15 High School age kids,
from Fox Tech,just hanging out.
My first thought was "Someone
needs to help teach those kids".
"What a waste of resources".
Without a second going by... the
voice inside answered me.
" WHY NOT YOU ! "
I had no Answer. I found
my Religion and got it back.
That evening
I opened the Newspaper to the
Want Ads. and read a notice.
Math Teacher position open.
South Side ISD.
I called the phone number and
the Principal , Jim Persyn,
came over to my house and
interviewed me in my living
room. The next week,
I Went to work for one of
the finest men I have met.
Twenty Five years and Five
School Districts later,
I retired in 2001.
However,
I continued to teach part-time,
and Full time at various sites.
both at SAISD and St Philip's
College until this year 2011.
I am now Finally Retired.
I am currently living near
McAllen Tx.but my home is
in San Antonio.

Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
