Today's Featured Biography
Luanne Warner Katz
The career highlights of my life have been in music, with a number of "side jobs" to support my habit! After getting my BFA from USD, I moved to Portland, Oregon via Seattle. There I played Principal Percussion in the Oregon Symphony, and the Portland Opera and Ballet Orchestras.
From there I went to Rochester, New York and got my Masters degree at Eastman School of Music. Wanting to stay on the east coast, I moved to Boston and taught percussion at the Berklee School of Music and played in various orchestras, including the Boston Pops (great fun!) Here I also played in my first rock band - another side of life!
Having enough of the east coast, in 1993, I moved back to the west, this time to San Francisco. I lived there for 13 years and played with the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and another all-girl rock band called "D'Cuckoo" - (even more fun!)
After kissing many frogs from coast to coast, I found the love of my life in the Bay Area, my husband, Ken. We were married in 2003 and lived in Oakland until last year. In 2006, we made a radical change and moved to a small island in Canada - Salt Spring Island, British Columbia. It is just across the US border as we can see the US San Juan Islands out our window. The island is very rural, much like Iowa except for all the surrounding sea water and bald eagles! We even have sheep in our pasture! I keep up my music by travelling to Portland periodically to play with the Oregon Symphony. As we are still new here, we're making life up as we go, but living a very rich, dynamic life in our version of paradise.
