Pauline Grace Bowden
Pauline C. Bowden (1932-2008)
Pauline Caroline (Grace) Bowden went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, December 4, 2008 at the age of 76 at Marian West.
Pauline was born November 13, 1932 in East Los Angeles, California to Michael John Grace, Sr, and Caroline Rose Foster. Pauline graduated from Santa Monica High School in 1951. After High School, she worked for Packard Bell Radio and TV for 4 years. Pauline met James Bowden at the Aragon Ballroom in Ocean Park, California. Pauline and Jim were married on May 15, 1954 in Quartzsite, Arizona. They lived in the Los Angeles Area from 1954 to 1957, then moved to Lompoc. They moved to Santa Maria in 1958, where they raised their four children.
Pauline was a domestic engineer, car pooling her four children to piano and Accordion lessons, church functions, Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, Rainbow Girls and Santa Maria City Swim Club practice for many years. When the kids left home, she sold Avon for over 30 years. She also belonged to the Avon Collectors Club.
Pauline was very active in several organizations. She was a Past President of the Native Daughters of the Golden West Parlor #276. She as also a Past President of the Nipomo Seniors Club. Pauline was a member of the Santa Maria Seniors Club, Eastern Star Mizpah Chapter #97 for over 25 years, Emera Club, Santa Maria Genealogy Society, Hard of Hearing Club, Orcutt Garden Club, Santa Maria Cancer support group, Tops #882, Salvation Army (Home League), Folk Dancers of Santa Maria, St. Mary's Sunshine Club, Allan Hancock College Swim Exercise Class, Trailer Rancho Mobile Home Bingo Group, and the Santa Maria Senior Nutrition Bingo Group.
Pauline treasured the many friendships through all of the organizations she participated in. She also enjoyed traveling, ship cruises and seeing new places. She will be missed by all that knew her.
Pauline is survived by her son, Michael Bowden (Shirlee) of Santa Maria, daughter Tami Wilkening (Mark) of Santa Maria, daughter Leann Purdum (John) of Santa Maria, sister-in-law June Grace, 1 granddaughter, 3 great grandchildren, 12 nieces, 10 nephews and cousins. She is also survived by her loving dog TJ.
Pauline is preceded in death by her husband James G. Bowden in 2003, her son Prentiss Jay "Pete" Bowden in 2001, father Michael John Grace, Sr. in 1971, her mother Caroline Rose Grace in 1987, her brother Michael John Grace, Jr. in 2005, and her sister Arlene Rose Grace in 1930.
Memorials may be made in Pauline Bowden's memory to the American Cancer Society, Santa Maria Valley Unit, 426 East Barcellus, Suite 305, Santa Maria, CA 93454.
A Rosary will be held on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. at the Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary Chapel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John Newmann Catholic Church located at 966 West Orchard Avenue in Santa Maria, with burial to follow at the Santa Maria Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary and Crematory.
