Today's Featured Biography

Ron Schlittler

Since the 30th class reunion much has changed and much has staid fairly much the same. As for what remains the same, I still live in DC, still happily single, still working in LGBT rights, and still cater waitering on the side.

What is different is that I left the national PFLAG office after 10 years, one of those as interim executive director. I decided I was interested in what was happening with LGBT rights issues globally, so at 50 got a masters degree from George Washington University in international policy and practice, with a focus on international human rights law.

After the program I landed a job in the LGBT Concerns Office of the American Psychological Association. It has both a domestic and an international focus. For more on the domestic work, check out http://www.apa.org/pi/lgbt/index.aspx and for the international check out www.ipsynet.org.

Being at the APA and having no background in psychology, much to my surprise, I went back to school again for a first-of-its-kind graduate certificate program in LGBT Health Policy & Practice, also at GW. I recommend it!

I will wrap up with a reflection on one of my favorite memories of East High - it was our class that voted on the design for the Thunderbird mascot. I still think we made the right choice - it was in a way a gift from our class to all who have followed.
