Today's Featured Biography
Glen Hardin
My wife and I are heading to Alaska for a couple week vacation and hope
to attending the reunion (hope no one minds) and to see a little bit
of the state of the last frontier.
So, I hope this finds you all well. It has been about 21 years since I
left.
In the time past:
Leaving Alaska my senior year was not something I desired but the job
market being what it was for my parents it was necessary. My senior
year was spent in Fallon, Nevada. It is a farming community with a
Naval Air Station on hour east of Reno on the high desert. Truly, the
change could not have been more dramatic.
I attended the University of Nevada, Reno on a running scholarship.
Studied Electrical Engineering and due to the demands of school stopped
running competitively to focus on school (I never was a very good
student). Graduated with a BSEE with a minor in Business
Administration. In my last year of college, I started working as a
bench technician on some of the first RF two-way set top boxes. Upon
graduation, I moved to Marin County, California just about 20 miles
north of the Golden Gate Bridge to work with the parent company. This
company was one of the first interactive television companies in the
industry. I can easily say Marin County is one of the best places to
live in the world. My work has been focused on developing and deploying
interactive television systems and digital video on demand systems.
Much of my work was pioneering and has been successful in the market
place and I am seen as an expert within my field. Pretty much for many
years I was a workaholic commuting between Marin and all points beyond.
My work within this volatile developing industry has moved me between a
few companies and has allowed me to travel around the world (a proper
crossing from South Hampton, England to NYC on the QE2, Singapore,
Macro/Micronesia, Middle East, Europe, Japan, spent 9/11 in NYC, almost
all major US cities traveling around 100K miles per year). Travel for
business is not really glamorous but it can be interesting. In between
work for pleasure I have visited Australia’s Sydney, Perth, Great Reef,
Kimberly outback, Indonesia, Bali, Malaysia, in Peru hiked the Inca
trail to Machupichu and explored the Amazon Basin, celebrated
Oktoberfest in Munich and Carnival in Brazil.
I used to tout myself as a modern nomad, but last year that period came
to an end. I met my wife to be (Julie) on 8/11/02 at a club breakfast
run in Marin (run 13 miles to build up an appetite and then bagels),
proposed on 8/27 to her in a canoe on a lake in Bemidji, Minnesota (her
parents run a boys and girls summer camp as the family business) and
married her three months later on 10/26/03 (going to South Africa for
our honeymoon).
Soon after meeting Julie, I was offered a job with Time Warner Cable in
their corporate engineering group as Director of Digital Video Services
in Charlotte, NC which is where we now live. It was very hard to leave
the Bay Area.
Basically, I am responsible for development of all the technical
infrastructure for the advanced cable services such a digital cable,
encoding, MPEG-2 processing, advanced transport technologies, digital
video servers and a bunch of other junk. To this end I lead a group a
really dedicated engineers that allows customers, from the comfort of
their home to press play on their remote control and have a movie play
with VCR like controls. I still say that my real job is to put
Blockbuster with their nasty late fees out of business.
I am sure so much has changed since I left Alaska. I am looking forward
to seeing it and showing it to Julie. We are heading up to the
Anchorage on Saturday the 31st and plan on heading down to the Kenai
Peninsula for the week, back to Anchorage for the weekend of the
reunion and after that head up to Denali for most of the next week. A
short trip that I hope will whet her appetite for another visit (with a
shorter time interval).
We have not really solidified any of our plans so please let us know
your favorite places not to miss. As matter of fact we just really
committed to go to Alaska in the last couple of week.
